PhilBoxing.com

Manila---13-Time Philippine Open Champion Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. is scheduled to compete in the ASEAN Seniors Chess Championships to be held from July 1 to 11, 2025, in Penang, Malaysia.

"I would like to thank Penang Chess Association President Atty. See Swee Sie, who is also the Vice President of the Malaysian Chess Federation, for inviting me to participate in the ASEAN Seniors Chess Championships in Penang, Malaysia, from July 1 to 11, 2025. Hoping to get some ELO rating points," said Antonio.

"I would also like to thank Mr. Ignatius Leong for organizing the ASEAN Seniors Chess Championships and ASEAN Age Chess Championships," he added.

The 63-year-old Antonio is fresh from runner-up honors in the Melbourne International Open Rapid Chess Championships held from April 7 to 9, 2025, at the Melbourne Chess Club in Melbourne, Australia. Antonio once again brought pride to the Philippines by finishing fourth in the Premier Division of the 2025 O2C Doeberl Cup Chess Championships Standard competition, held from April 17 to 21 in Canberra, Australia.

Also invited to the ASEAN Seniors Chess Championships are IM Jose Efren Bagamasbad, IM Angelo Young, IM Rico Mascarinas, and NM Almario Marlon Bernardino Jr. of the Philippines; GM Cao of Vietnam; IM Sadikin and IM Gunawan of Indonesia; IM Chan of Singapore; and IM Liew of Malaysia.

The event will feature the ASEAN Seniors Standard, Rapid, and Blitz events, as well as the Pre-SEA Games event of Makruk Chess (Thai chess) and ASEAN Chess. There will also be an age group competition.

Antonio is set to compete in the Woman FIDE Master Sheerie Joy Lomibao Open Rapid Chess Championships on May 18, 2025, at the ground floor of Pavilion Mall, Greenfield District in Mandaluyong City, beside the MRT Shaw Boulevard station.

He is also scheduled to compete in the Asian Dragons Invitational Chess Tournament from July 12 to 16, 2025, in Taipei City, Taiwan.

Antonio is also scheduled to represent the Philippines at the FIDE World Seniors Chess Championships from October 20 to November 2, 2025, in Gallipoli, Puglia, Italy.

Last Wednesday, May 7, 2025, GM Antonio graced the Art Exhibition hosted by Mr. Jeff Bugayong at Contemporary, Okada Manila. This is the 7th Art Exhibition of Mr. Bugayong and the first art exhibition of his children, A Bugayong and BC Bugayong.

Mr. Bugayong is a staunch chess supporter of GM Antonio. -Marlon Bernardino-
