NIETES READY TO TAKE ON ALL COMERS By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Wed, 27 Jan 2010 Battle-tested WBO minimumweight champion Donnie Nietes has emphasized he is ready to take on anyone in his next fight, whether in a unification battle or in defense of his WBO title. The Bacolod-raised, Cebu-based fighter is coming off a tenth-round technical knockout win over Mexican Jesus Silvestre on Saturday at the Cuneta Astrodome. "I have no idea yet on my next fight, but I will be ready," Nietes said yesterday, hinting that a unification duel with any of the other 105-lb world champions or a defense of his title would be a welcome proposition. Reports are also coming out that Nietes might be considered for a showdown with WBO light-flyweight kingpin Ivan Calderon, who was in talks for a possible 3-fight showdown with Viloria before the latter's loss last Saturday. When told that a possible title defense is being readied for him in Dubai on April 9, Nietes just shrugged if off, noting that nothing is etched in stone until a fight contract is in his hands. Sportsman Antonio L. Aldeguer, who discovered Nietes while first working as a janitor at the ALA Gym, indicated that there has been an offer for a Dubai fight, although he said nothing is definite as of this time. Nietes, who along with superstar Manny Pacquiao is touted as a "Mexicutioner," holds the distinction as the only Filipino to defend his title successfully and successively in Mexico, with back to back wins over Erik Ramirez and Manuel Vargas. Donnie Nietes (2nd from right) wins again during last Saturday's event at the Cuneta Astrodome in Pasay City, Philippines. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Salven L. Lagumbay. |
