CSAC SUSPENDS MARGARITO?S LICENSE By Ed de la Vega, DDS PhilBoxing.com Fri, 30 Jan 2009 Los Angeles, CA: Reports indicate that the boxing license of former WBO Welterweight champion, Antonio Margarito has been suspended by the California State Athletic Commission. Margarito, the ?Tijuana Tornado? and his trainer Javier Capetillo were called on to appear before the Commission on February 10th. Carpetillo?s license was suspended as well pending the results of the investigations. The suspension is the aftermath of the allege incident at the dressing rooms before Margarito fought Shane Mosley at the Staples Center last January 24th. Mosley?s trainer allegedly found ?questionable? substance on the wrappings of Margarito?s hands and alerted the Commission. The Commission members present that evening did their initial investigations and as a result asked Margarito to remove his hand wrappings and they keep it as evidence for further review. They then required him to re-wrap his hands in their presence before the fight proceeded. The suspension of the duo?s licenses will stand pending the results of the investigation of the California Department of Justice to determine if any rules were violated Commission Chairman Tim Noonan says the investigation stems from a rule that limits the amount and type of gauze and tape allowed under the fighter?s gloves. Shane Mosley in what many called an ?upset? beat Margarito so bad at the fight prompting Margarito?s corner to throw in the towel. The loss and the damage in Margarito?s reputation could possibly end his career and definitely blew away the possible mega bucks fight with Manny Pacquiao. So what is now in Margarito?s future? As far as this writer is concerned, if Margarito is found guilty of ?cheating? by using illegal substance in his hand wrappings, he should never be allowed to fight again in California or anywhere in this country. The same goes for his trainer. There is no excuse for willful violations of the rules, particularly with regards to hand wrappings Illegal hand wrapping can potentially cause permanent damage to an opponent and God forbids, even death. Therefore fighters found using such illegal means to improve their chances of winning, as well as the trainers who actually place the illegal wrappings should be kicked-out of boxing. No excuses and no second chances. If Margarito and his trainer are found guilty, will members of the California State Athletic Commission be gutsy enough to implement such harsh punishment for an equally harsh violation? That we shall see! Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ed de la Vega, DDS. |
