Vayson vies for WBA/WBO titles

PhilBoxing.com

If Jayson Vayson dethrones WBA/WBO minimumweight champion Oscar Collazo of Puerto Rico in their scheduled 12-round bout at the Fantasy Springs Resort and Casino in Indio, California, on Sept. 20, it will mean a complete Filipino sweep of the four 105-pound titles. Melvin Jerusalem wears the WBC belt and Pedro Taduran, the IBF strap.

Vayson, 27, left for the US last night and will be joined by manager Brico Santig next week. MP Promotions head Sean Gibbons’ son Brendan arranged Vayson’s title crack with Golden Boy Promotions.

“50-50 ang laban,” said Santig. “Ready na si Jayson at three months nag-training sa Baguio for an IBF title eliminator tapos ‘di natuloy kaya tamang-tama ang timing. Semi-fighter, semi-amateur si Jayson at balak laruin si Collazo. Kung tamaan niya ng solid, follow-up kaagad.” Santig said Collazo’s reputation as a Filipino tormentor is well-known but Vayson isn’t fazed. Collazo’s Filipino victims were Garen Diagan, Jerusalem and Vic Saludar. “Kausap ko si Garen at sabi niya, dapat maganda ang depensa ni Jayson kasi malakas at mabilis si Collazo,” said Santig who named Jayr Raquinel and John Michael Zulueta as Vayson’s chief sparmates.

Collazo, 28, turned pro in 2020 and has compiled a 12-0 record, with nine KOs. The southpaw won the WBO crown on a seventh round disposal of Jerusalem in 2023 then annexed the WBA title via a seventh round stoppage of Thailand's Knockout CP Freshmart in Saudi Arabia last November. Collazo retained both titles on a fifth round stoppage of Edwin Cano in Mexico last March.

Vayson, ranked No. 7 by WBO, made his pro debut in 2016 and totes a 14-1-1 record with eight KOs. A road warrior from Agusan del Sur, he fought his last seven bouts overseas. Vayson cracked the world rankings after stopping former WBO minimumweight titlist Ryuya Yamanaka in the second round in Kobe, Japan, in 2023. He scored KOs in his last two outings in Thailand.
