Gentri's Suyamin nails Eastern Asian Youth Rapid Chess gold medal By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Sun, 14 Jul 2024 Manila---Veteran age-group campaigner Woman National Master Bonjoure Fille Suyamin of General Trias City, Cavite saved the best for last for Philippine delegation as she erased all her frustrations by winning her coveted gold medal in the international chess arena. The 14-year-old Suyamin, a grade 8 student of Far Eastern University, copped the gold in a podium finish of the 8th Eastern Asian Youth Rapid Chess Championship 2024 - Girls 16-under individual rapid event on Saturday, July 13 at the Cititel Penang, George Town in Pulau Pinang, Malaysia. Suyamin, one of the top players of General Trias City Chess Club, won her 1st five rounds against Katherine Samantha Likoh of Malaysia, Tze Chi Liew of Singapore, Erdenebat Tugstuguldur of Mongolia, AFM Quinsha Adinda Syahirah of Indonesia and Altankhuyag Maral of Mongolia. Despite losing to WCM Davaakhuu Unurzul of Mongolia in the sixth and penultimate round, Suyamin bounced back after beating AIM Zoljargal Enkhkhaliun of Mongolia in the seventh and final round to win the title in this FIDE tournament, organized by Penang Chess Association and Malaysian Chess Federation. The governing international body for this event is the Asian Chess Federation (ACF) and World Chess Federation (FIDE). Among those who are supporting her chess campaign here and abroad are Mayor Luis Ferrer IV, Vice Mayor Jonas Glyn Labuguen, Cavite Sixth Dist. Rep. Antonio Ferrer, Sports Head Rodolfo Comandante Jr., Arena FIDE Master Coach Ederwin Estavillo, Del Rosario Christian Institute, Far Eastern University, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines headed by its chairman/president Prospero "Butch" Arreza Pichay Jr. “Again I would like to dedicate my victory to my countrymen. It’s an honor to represent our country,” said Suyamin, a member of the Philippine age group team who saw action in the 2023 FIDE World Youth Chess Championship held at the Pala Dean Martin centro congressi in Montesilvano, Italy last October. Meanwhile, FIDE Master Christian Gian Karlo Arca copped a bronze medal in the Boys 18-under individual rapid event. Arca, a Grade 9 student from Dasmariñas Integrated High School, finished tied for third with Wee Yin Lin of Malaysia and FM Battulga Tenuunbold of Mongolia with 5.0 points but got the bronze via the superior quotient. FM Poh Yu Tian of Malaysia won the gold with 6.0 points followed by silver medalist Dang Anh Minh of Vietnam who toted 5.5 points. The 15-year-old Almaty, Kazakhstan Asian Youth Blitz Chess U16 champion Arca, is one of the top players of Dasmariñas Chess Academy under mayor Jenny Barzaga, coun. Kiko Barzaga and national coach FM Roel Abelgas. Noel Bernil Jr. of Tanjay City, Negros Oriental failed to win the bronze after losing to AFM Suyog Bagul Aaradhya of Singapore in the last round in the Boys 12-under individual rapid event. The 12-year-old Bernil remains at 4.0 points, and was dropped in a tie for 12th to 16th placers. Le Anh Tu of Vietnam won the gold with 6.0 points followed by silver medallist Zhang Haoxuan(Zj) of China who toted 5.5 points and bronze medallist Wang Zihao(Sh) of China with 5.0 points.
