MANILA---Mar Aviel Carredo of Quezon City won 5 golds and 1 silver medal to emerge the most bemedalled athlete in the chess competition at the conclusion of Philippine Sports Commission-Batang Pinoy National Championships last Wednesday, December 21, in Vigan, Ilocos Sur.

The 11-year-old Bagong Silangan Elementary School sixth-grader swept the 11 Under Male Batang Pinoy Rapid individual category en route the gold medal.

Carredo scored victories over Zyrus Wayne Manalang of Candon City in the first round, Jasper Nash Jayme of Misamis, Oriental in the second round, Justin Jed P. “I'm very happy with this victory, winning 5 golds and 1 silver,” said the amiable Carredo.

"It's my dream to eventually compete for our country in bigger competitions like the ASEAN and Asian/Eastern Age Group, World Youth and World Junior chess championships," added Carredo, who thank to his grandfather Avelino "Eli" Labian Carredo for his undying support to his chess career as well to Mayor Joy Belmonte, Vice Mayor Gian Sotto, Coun. Philippine Sports Commission commissioner and Bowling icon Olivia "Bong" Coo had something to say to the most bemedalled athlete Carredo.

"Congratulations Mar Aviel Carredo of Quezon City for winning 5 golds and 1 silver sa Batang Pinoy. Hanga ako sa sipag at galing mo! Hopefully masama ka na sa 2023 National Team Pool. Maligayang Pasko!!," said Coo, who is also the first Filipino athlete to make it to the Guinness Book of World Records twice.

The dynamic duo of Carredo and Allan Rafael Dolfo settled for second in the 11 Under Male Batang Pinoy Rapid team category to go home with the silver medal.

Actually, the tandem of Aton and Lance Andrei L. Lao of Davao City took the gold while the pair of Ran Zeth Marco Magallanes and Dwayne Alekhine Sapuan of Dipolog City won the bronze.
