PH chess wunderkind Michael Jan Stephen "Bonbon" Rosalem Inigo too strong for his rivals

MANILA---The just concluded 1st Hon. Cezanne Fritz Diaz dubbed as Siaton Fiesta Open Chess Tournament held at the Jica Building, Siaton National High School, Brgy. 3 in Siaton, Negros Oriental last Dec. 3, PH chess wunderkind Michael Jan Stephen "Bonbon" Rosalem Inigo proved too strong for his rivals, who grabbed the spotlight from the other woodpushers and topped the Open category.
The 15-year-old pride of Bayawan City, Negros Oriental Inigo won the field by snaring the crown with 5.5 points in 6 rounds despite halving the point to veteran campaigner Drigo Teves of Pamplona, Negros Oriental in the penultimate round.
Teves, Lance Nathaniel Orlina of Sibulan, Bobby Torres and Gemon Tolentino of Dumaguete City wound up tied for second with five points apiece but Orlina took the silver with the better tiebreaker in this event sponsored by Hon. Cezanne Fritz Diaz in the 10 minutes plus 5 second increment rapid time control format.
"I'm so happy to win the tournament," said Inigo, a Grade 10 student of Bayawan City Science and Technology Education Center (BCSTEC).
"Congratulations my son Michael Jan Stephen "Bonbon" Rosalem Inigo solo champion in the 1st Hon. Cezanne Fritz Diaz dubbed as Siaton Fiesta Open Chess Tournament with undefeated score 5.5 out of 6 rounds," said proud mother Jeanshen Rosalem.
Inigo is fresh from winning the Eastern Asia Youth Chess Championship held in Asia Hotel in Bangkok, Thailand from Nov. 4 to 12.
He won 3 silver in the team Rapid, Blitz and Standard and 2 Bronze in the individual Rapid and Blitz to raise his total of 5 medals under his belt.-Marlon Bernardino-
