Lorenzo rips Taguba, still on top in 1st Marinduque FIDE-Rated Chess Tournament

MANILA---Arena Grandmaster Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo defended well with the white pieces and completed a stunning win over Rey Julius Taguba to remain on top after six rounds of the 1st Marinduque FIDE-Rated Chess Tournament held at the Paraiso Enterprises, Inc. Farm in Boac, Marinduque on Saturday.
The victory came after Lorenzo, one of the PCAP's Laguna Heroes top player, defeated Christian Nanola in the fifth round Friday, hiking his output to 5.5 points halfway through the 9-round Swiss system event, organized by Boac Knight Chess Club, Inc. President Engr. Lauro Bautista and supported by Marinduque Rep. Lord Allan Velasco, RMB Paraiso Enterprises, Inc. Farm, Bahay sa Kanto Cafe and Giovanni Buhain of Green Metro Builders Dev't, Inc.
Earlier, Lorenzo scored victories over Richard Pelaez in the first round, halving the point with Robert Neil Mataac in the second round, toppled Jersey Marticio in the third round and Jeremy Marticio in the fourth round in this Single Round Robin, 1 hour + 30 seconds increment National Chess Federation of the Philippines sanctioned tournament.
"This is a quarterly event. We would like to produce many FIDE-rated players in Marinduque and eventually produce masters in chess," said Engr. Lauro Bautista, President of Boac Knight Chess Club, Inc.
The champion will earn P10,000 plus a trophy. The second placer will get P7,000, third P5,000, fourth P3,000 and fifth P2,000.
