Nicolas, Toledo, Oncita power Pasig City Grassroots Knights past Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates in PCAP chess tilt

MANILA---Nika Juris Nicolas destroyed Mariel Batulan Romero in their rapid duel to power the Pasig City Grassroots Knights to a 11.5-9.5 thrashing of Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates in the Third Conference of Professional Chess Association of the Philippines online chess tournament virtually held at Chess.com Platform last Saturday.
The 10-year-old Nicolas, who led the Philippine team of Girls under 10 to a 1 Silver and 2 Bronze finish in the Asian Youth Chess Championships held recently in Bali, Indonesia, defeated Mariel Batulan Romero in 63 moves of Slav Defense.
"Surigao is a strong team. We were just lucky for beating them tonight. It was indeed a tight match," said coach Franco Camillo.
Also delivering for the Pasig backed up by mayor Vico Sotto are Andrew James Toledo and Summer Justine Oncita.
The 13-year-old Toledo trounced Johnnel Balquin while the 12 years old Oncita subdued Antonio Chavez Jr.
Aron Joshue Toledo drew with Fide Master Vince Alaan.
John Ranel Morazo, Cyril Ortega and Joselito Serna carried the good fight for Surigao woodpushers after beating Gabriel Ryan Paradero, Fide Master Rudy Ibanez and Steve Zacky Bolico, respectively.
According to coach Camillo, Pasig City Grassroots Knights beat Surigao Fianchetto Checkmates , 4.5-2.5, in blitz format and 7-all deadlock in the rapid play.-Marlon Bernardino-
