WIM Mariano finishes 11th in Stockholm chess tourney

MANILA---Woman International Master (WIM) Cristine Rose Mariano-Wagman took the eleventh place honors in the Stockholm Open lightning 2022 Chess Championships Tuesday at the Stockholms Schack Salongen in Stockholm, Sweden.

WIM Mariano finished with 6.5 points, the same output of Fide Master (FM) Felix Nordstrom, Frederik Christianson and Anders Ivarsson of Sweden. After the tie break points was applied, the former top player of the Philippine Airforce chess team settled overall 11th place.

Grandmaster (GM) Erik Blomqvist of Sweden took the title with 10.0 points, full point ahead with runner-up place Fide Master (FM) Felix Tuomainen of Sweden with 9.0 points.

The Umeå, Sweden based WIM Mariano, a Culinary student at Astar School, finished 15th in the Stockholm Open Standard chess championships which topped by Grandmaster (GM) Jonathan Westerberg of Sweden on Monday.

WIM Mariano's next assignment is the Women's Blitz Chess Championship to be held on September 3-4 at the Elite Hotell Palace in Stockholm, Sweden.

Grandmaster (GM) Pia Cramling is the top seed in the said chessfest while Woman International Master (WIM) Irina Tetenkina is the second seed and WIM Mariano is the third seed.

It shall be recalled that GM Cramling is fresh from winning her third Olympic individual gold as the best Board 1 player of the Women’s Chess Olympiad held in Chennai, India. GM Cramling scored outstanding 9.5/11 points and had a rating performance of 2532.
WIM Mariano on her part, an active member of the Rockaden Umea Schack Klubb, a chess club based in Sweden.

WIM Mariano earned an Arena Grandmaster (AGM) title from the FIDE, the world chess federation, an honor given to players who excel in tournaments played online. She is also the first Filipina FIDE instructor.

WIM Mariano recognized as one of the Philippines’ top women chess players before migrating to Umea, Sweden.

WIM Mariano is the first secretary-general of the National Chess Federation of the Philippines.

She is also the first female gold medallist in the UAAP and NCAA chess meet.

WIM Mariano is the former top player of the University of the East chess team alongside his younger brother Grandmaster (GM) Nelson "Jet" Mariano II.-Marlon Bernardino-
