PH bet Dandel Fernandez places 2nd in UAE chess tourney By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Wed, 24 Aug 2022 Final Standings: 6.5 points---FM Ammar Sedrani (UAE) 6.0 points---AGM Dandel Fernandez (PHI) 5.0 points---Ali Rashid Ali (UAE), Al-Kaabi Abdulla (UAE) 4.5 points---Walid Isam Ahmed (SUD) 4.0 points---Mosallam Mohammad (UAE), Ahmad Ali AL Mansoori (UAE), Khayyal Ayman (EGY), Saeed Ali Alkaabi (UAE) 3.5 points---Hani Daoud Hejazi (UAE), Omar Awad Aljaberi (UAE) MANILA---Arena Grandmaster (AGM) Dandel Fernandez once again showed that Pinoy chessers are world athletes after he finished second place in the tough 28th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival - Frontline Heroes in Radisson Blu Hotel & Resort, Abu Dhabi Corniche in Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates, on August 22. Fernandez scored 6.0 points on five wins and one loss to finish as first runner-up to the tournament behind champion UAE's Fide Master Ammar Sedrani who scored 6.5 points. Fernandez, a frontliner at the Saudi German Hospital in UAE also helped Philippines/Novelty chess team under the guidance of sportsman Sonsea Agonoy into a runner-up finish together his team mate and compatriot Nelman Lagutin in the 28th Abu Dhabi International Chess Festival - Communities Tournament last August 20. Fernandez, a former Maynilad top chess player made a biggest upset in the 2 by 2 team event after halving the point with International Master Ali Sebbar of Egypt in the fourth round, toppled Grandmaster Bassem Amin of Egypt in the sixth round and bested Fide Master Hilwani Talal of Syria in the seventh and final round. “I would like to dedicate my victory to God, to my Company Saudi German Hospital , my fellow frontliners as well to my countrymen.
