Former Lyceum top player Jonathan Jota claims Online Bullet Chess title

MANILA---Jonathan Jota of GMA, Cavite lived up to his high billing to rule the Basta BBM-Sara Uniteam Bullet Online Chess Leg 1 dubbed as Inday Sara Duterte Mahalin Natin Ang Pilipinas Chess Tournament virtually held at Lichess Platform last March 23, 2022.

Jota, a graduate student from Lyceum of the Philippines University Manila finished with 76 points to win the Arena online bullet tournament. The championship was worth P1,000.

Jota is best to remembered to gave up a chance to gain an International Master norm and instead led Lyceum of the Philippines University to a crucial victory in the Final 4 of the 2017 NCAA Season 93 chess competition at the LPU Auditorium in Manila.

Jota who was scheduled to play at the 2017 Battle of the Grandmasters in Makati City, but opted to default that match instead so as to represent his school against De La Salle-College of St. Benilde (CSB) in the Final 4.

The online tournament had time control of two minutes with an increment of one second and players must win as many games in two hours of play according to International Arbiter and National Master James Infiesto.

International Master Michael Concio Jr. of Dasmarinas City, Cavite came second with 74 points followed by third placer National Master Eric Labog Jr. of Solano, Nueva Vizcaya with 73 points, fourth placer Woman National Master Jerlyn Mae San Diego of Dasmarinas City, Cavite with 72 points and fifth placer Vince Duane Pascual of Hagonoy, Bulacan with 67 points.

Rounding up to the top ten (10) were Jan Clifford Labog of Solano, Nueva Vizcaya (sixth), Jayson Salubre of Panabo City, Davao del Norte (seventh), Anatoly Pascua of Caloocan City (eight), Jerome Villanueva of Pasig Ciy (ninth) and Bryle Arellano of Lapu Lapu City (tenth).

Adjudged category winners were National Master Mark Jay Bacojo of Dasmarinas City, Cavite (Top Luzon), reigning International Physically Disabled Chess Association (IPCA) world chess champion Fide Master Sander Severino of Silay City, Negros Occidental (Top Visayas), National Master Henry Roger Lopez of Panabo City, Davao del Norte (Top Mindanao) and National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr. (Top Media).-Marlon Bernardino-
