Laguna trips Quezon City, enter PCAP quarters By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Thu, 24 Mar 2022 MANILA---Defending Champion Laguna Heroes wrapped the 2nd season of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All Filipino Conference online chess tournament with a dominating victory against the Quezon City Simba's Tribe, 16-5, virtually held at Chess.com Platform Wednesday night, March 23, 2022. Backed up by KALARO, Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic and Rotary Club of Nuvali, the Laguna Heroes finished the Northern Division elimination round with 25 wins and eight defeats and has secured a sure ticket to the conference's quarterfinals. "The Laguna Heroes played as a team, and I want to congratulate them on that. They fought. Another thing, we are hoping to perform better in the knock-out round quarter-final stage," said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO, Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice and Engr. Jonathan Mamaril of Oregon, USA. "Our win tonight against Quezon City Simba's Tribe is great motivation for our upcoming matches," he added. It was a slow start for the Heroes against Quezon City after ending the first seven playing boards with just a one-point lead, 4-3, in the blitz game on wins by 8-time Illinois USA Champion International Master Angelo Young, Fide Master Austin Jacob Literatus, Woman National Master Jean Karen Enriquez and Apollo Agapay. Young defeated National Master Robert Arellano, Literatus subdued National Master Edgardo Garma, Enriquez toppled Michaela Concio and Agapay crushed Freddie Talaboc. Danilo Ponay, Joseph Navarro and Fide Master Robert Suelo Jr. carried the good fight for Quezon City after beating Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad, Richie Jocson and Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo, respectively. However, Laguna immediately flipped the switch in the rapid category and went on a 12-2 run courtesy of the Heroes’ five straight final board wins. The momentum-shifting five-board winning streak of Laguna came off huge wins from Concio, Bagamasbad, Agapay, Jocson and Lorenzo. Notable performances came from Young and Literatus who split their games.-Marlon Bernardino- Click here to view a list of other articles written by Marlon Bernardino. |
