MASAM SPORTS 50: JEO SANTISIMA AND JOE NOYNAY SUFFER LOSSES AND THEIR WORLD TITLE BIDS ARE SHELVED

PhilBoxing.com

The world title bids of Jeo "Santino" Santisima and Joe “Jawbreaker” Noynay are temporarily shelved when both fighters lost to their respective opponents in successive days.

Santisima was stopped via a technical knockout and was defeated by Joet Gonzalez at Save Mart Center in Fresno, California on March 4 for the World Boxing Organization international featherweight title.

Noynay was knocked out by Australian Liam Wilson in the second round of their rematch at the Nissan Arena in Brisbane, Australia on March 3 for the WBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title.

Santisima was hit by a staggering right hand which did not wobble him but the referee Edward Collantes stepped in and ended the bout at the 2:05 mark of the ninth round, thinking that the Filipino was receiving excessive head blows from his foe Mexican-American Gonzalez.

Santisima absorbed numerous head blows in the eighth round, which caused swelling on his face and blood running from his nose, that's why Collantes warned him of stopping the fight in the next round if he receives the same punishment.

The camp of Santisima violently protested to the referee of the alleged premature stoppage. Several fans, including Mexicans and Americans, also disapproved of the referee’s early stoppage, even approaching Jeo for photo opportunities in going to the dugout. Santisima's record dropped to 21-4 with 18 knockouts.

Gonzalez was the heavy favorite and he recovered from a convincing unanimous decision defeat to WBO featherweight champion Emanuel Navarrete on October 15, 2021. Gonzalez improved his record to 25-2 with 15 knockouts.

On February 22, 2020, Santisima was also stopped by Mexico’s Navarrete in the 11th round. Navarrete defended his belt in convincing fashion against the Filipino challenger, who fought for a world title for the first time.

The world title aspirations of Cebuano fighter Noynay will be delayed after he was knocked out by Australian Liam Wilson in the second round of their rematch in Australia.

The 25-year-old Wilson floored Noynay twice in the second round on the way to wresting the World Boxing Organization (WBO) Asia Pacific super featherweight title. Noynay successfully defended the title three times before losing to Wilson on Thursday evening.

Wilson threw and landed a perfectly timed left hook that battered Noynay in the second round. A tough combination of punches followed up to send the Filipino to his knees.

Noynay got up only to be thrashed seconds later with another left hook that sent him collapsing down to the floor. The Bogo City boxer was able to get up immediately, but was groggy forcing his cornermen to climb the ring to stop the fight.

Since the start, Noynay had problems shedding extra weight during the official weigh-in, as he was four kilograms over the contracted limit.

“I’ve prepared very well for this fight to the point where I don’t really care too much about the weight advantage,” Wilson told Sporting News.

“This has been on my mind for eight months, this rematch is all I’ve ever wanted. I couldn’t live with myself if I was to walk away from a fight that I know I can win and here we are, I’m not walking away.”

Noynay lost his title in the scales for failure to reduce to the weight limit. The belt was then at stake only for Wilson. Noynay suffered his third loss with 19 wins, eight knockouts and two draws. Wilson improved to 10-1 with seven knockouts.

Last July, Noynay defeated Wilson after scoring a technical knockout in the fifth round. He floored Wilson four times in their first duel.

Noynay, scored a magnificent fifth-round technical knockout victory on July 7, 2021, to successfully defend his WBO Asia Pacific super featherweight title against then unbeaten Australian Liam Wilson in Newcastle, New South Wales, Australia.

Before that, the 25-year old Noynay who fights under the Elorde Boxing Gym banner also triumphantly defended his title against Japanese challengers Kenichi Ogawa by 5th round technical decision and Satoshi Shimizu by 6th round TKO.
