Laguna Heroes bounce back, trounce Quezon City Simba's Tribe By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Thu, 10 Feb 2022 MANILA---The Laguna Heroes recovered from a setback to the San Juan Predators by blasting the Quezon City Simba's Tribe, 16.5-4.5, in the 2nd season of the Professional Chess Association of the Philippines (PCAP) All Filipino Conference online chess tournament virtually held at Chess.com Platform Wednesday, February 9, 2022. Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr. bested National Master Edgardo Garma to power the Heroes to a 9-2 win-loss record in the Northern Division. Barcenilla, a many-time national champion, downed Garma in 42 moves of English Opening in their blitz duel before winning in 43 moves of Bird's Opening in the rapid play. “It was an encouraging sight to see that we were able to bounce back with wins over Quezon City Simba's Tribe after a sorry loss to San Juan Predators,” said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO, Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice and Engr. Jonathan Mamaril of Oregon, USA. Also delivering wins for the Heroes backed up by KALARO, Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic and Rotary Club of Nuvali were Woman National Master Jean Karen Enriquez, Fide Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad, Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo and Apollo Agapay. Enriquez bested Michaela Concio, Bagamasbad crushed Danilo Ponay, Lorenzo subdued Freddie Talaboc, and Agapay nipped Joseph Navarro. National Master Robert Arellano and National Master Robert Suelo Jr. averted a shutout for the Quezon City Simba's Tribe in the rapid play. Arellano upset International Master Angelo Young while Suelo drew with Richie Jocson. The Laguna Heroes trounced Quezon City Simba's Tribe in blitz portion, 5.5-1.5, as well as in the rapid format, 11-3. Up next for the Heroes are the Iloilo Kisela Knights and the Iriga City Oragons on Saturday. The Pasig City King Pirates and the San Juan Predators currently pace the Northern Division with similar 10-1 records. Iloilo Kisela Knights, on the other hand, is lording the Southern Division with 10-1 win-loss slate. PCAP, the country’s first and only play-for-pay chess league, is headed by Atty. Paul Elauria as President-Commissioner; Michael Angelo Ong Chua as Chairman; Dr. Ariel Potot as Vice Chairman and Atty. Arnel Batungbakal as Treasurer.
