The Laguna Heroes totally outclassed their opponent as they just smashed the Chess Wizzards two games in a row. It was a fine start for Laguna as Davao fought hard in the Blitz category of the first match but yielded, 6-1. In the Rapid category, the Heroes won five out of the seven playing boards. Grandmaster Rogelio "Banjo" Barcenilla Jr. toppled National Master Aglipay Oberio after 62 moves of Ruy Lopez Opening, Grandmaster John Paul Gomez subdued Arnel Aton after 46 moves of Benoni defense, Michella Concio defeated Woman National Master Ella Grace Moulic after 43 moves of London System Opening, Kimuel Aaron Lorenzo trounced Anthony Mosqueda after 56 moves of Sicilian defense and Candidate Master Arjie Bayangat beat Lydon Sombilon after 35 moves of Queens Gambit Declined. Davao tried acting in a new way, especially more quickly than before in the second encounter but the experience and flawless performance of the Heroes allowed them to gain the edge to finish the game, 14.5-6.5. "We are happy for having a fine start in the knock out stage. Beating Davao is a big motivation to us," said Arena Grandmaster Dr. Fred Paez, one of the four co-team owner of the Laguna Heroes that include Mr. David Nithyananthan of KALARO, Engr. Benjamin Dy of SDC Global Choice and Engr. Jonathan Mamaril of Oregon, USA. Backed up by KALARO, Greatech Philippines, Inc., SDC Global Choice, Jolly Smile Dental Clinic, and Rotary Club of Nuvali, the Laguna Heroes will take on the tough San Juan Predators in the semifinals who swept the Isabela’s Knights of Alexander, 15.5-5.5 and 18-3, earlier. The other semis pairing in the Northern Division pit the Pasig City King Pirates and the Caloocan Loadmanna Knights, who posted contrasting wins. Pasig dominated the Rizal Batch Towers, 16-5 and 17.5-3.5, while Caloocan survived the Armageddon duel against the Manila Indios Bravos, 0-3, 13-8, 2-1. Iloilo, meanwhile, arranges a semis date with Lapu-Lapu City Naki Warrios, who bested Toledo City Trojans, 12-9 and 3-0. Lapu-Lapu City, on the other hand nipped Singapore, 9-12, 13.5-7.5 and 2-1. Camarines Soaring Eagle edged Paralympics, 11-10 and 12-9, to clash with Penang (Malaysia) in the other Final Four pairing.
