FIDE Online Rapid World Cup Cadets & Youth - Open 12 and under: NM Ivan Travis Cu bounces back into contention

MANILA, Philippines– National Master Ivan Travis Cu of the Philippines bounced back from a so-so opening performance and picked up two victories to wheel back into contention in the FIDE Online Rapid World Cup Cadets & Youth - Open 12 and under virtually held at Tornelo Platform.
Cu who beat Gerelmaa Chuluunbaatar of Mongolia in the opening round but yielded to No.3 seed Edgar Mamedov of Kazakhstan in the second round, beat Giorgi Gogiashvili of Georgia in the third round and Javier Alonso Arias Diaz of Chile in the 4th round to vault into a tie for 17th together with compatriots National Masters Christian Gian Karlo Tade-Arca and Al-Basher Buto with three points in the 200-player field.
The 12-year-old Cu, a Grade 7 pupil of Xavier School in San Juan City subdued Gogiashvili in 32 moves of English Opening on Saturday then crushed Arias Diaz 37 moves of Modern Benoni defense on Sunday.
Meanwhile, the 12-year-old Arca, a Grade 6 GT Neptune pupil of Panabo Central Elementary School SPED Center in Panabo City, Davao del Norte won his first three matches but fell short to Tran Gia Phuc Pham of Vietnam in the fourth round in 47 moves of Modern Benoni defense.
The 11-year-old Buto, a Grade 6 pupil of Faith Christian School in Cainta, Rizal, on the other hand, won his first two matches but yielded in the third round then checkmated Mateo Boci of Albania in the fourth round in 89 moves of French defense.
The top 10 finishers after this competition will advance to the next round of this World Chess Federation-FIDE tournament.-Marlon Bernardino-
