SPORTS SHORTS 49: EDDIE REYNOSO FAVORS TANK DAVIS FOR RYAN GARCIA THAN MANNY PACQUIAO By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Mon, 08 Feb 2021 Eddy Reynoso speaks on what he feels the best fights for his trainee, rising star WBC interim lightweight champion Ryan Garcia. "KingRy" Garcia (21-0, 18KOs) is less interested to vie for Devin Haney’s WBC world lightweight title but preferred a profitable pay-per-view bout with Gervonta "Tank" Davis (24-0, 23KOs), the WBA regular lightweight title holder. Then a lot of publicity emerged on the so-called dream fight with former eight-division champion Manny Pacquiao (62-7-2, 39KOs) on a catchweight match. The rumors escalated of a fight with Pacquiao when his original desired opponent Conor McGregor suffered a knockout loss to Dustin Poirier in their UFC rematch last month. * * * “I really don’t like that fight,” Reynoso told BoxingScene.com. “Manny Pacquiao has all that experience, it’s a fight at a heavier weight against (a naturally) bigger fighter. But in my role as a teacher, my job is to prepare him for these fights that he and the team accept." Reynoso said Garcia consults with him just as he does with his adviser, Guadalupe Valencia, and his mother and father. "Garcia respects my opinion when it comes to that, and I give him my opinion on those fights from my perspective and my point of view as a trainer. But the final decision is made by Golden Boy Promotions, by his promoter Oscar de la Hoya. They value my input and take it into consideration and I am pleased with that part of it, " he added. * * * Golden Boy Promotions president Eric Gomez has publicly declared that the fight with Pacquiao won’t be Garcia's next match. "The fight I like more is Tank Davis,” Reynoso asserted. “To me, it’s a far more interesting fight. They are at the same weight and their fight can exceed expectations.” Garcia and Davis both possessed huge social media following. A simulated poster was publicized on the Instagram accounts of both undefeated fighters accumulated more than 1,000,000 combined likes, and the two boxers are box-office draws when they fight. * * * “A fight between Ryan Garcia and Tank Davis can be the biggest fight in boxing,” cited Reynoso. “They are two of the biggest stars of this new generation. Manny Pacquiao is great but he’s part of a past generation. The young fans of Ryan Garcia and young fans of Gervonta Davis are going to want to see that fight.” * * * The Boxing Writers Association of America named Eddy Reynoso as “Trainer of the Year 2019.” Edilson "Eddy" Reynoso is the son of the legendary trainer, José "Chepo" Reynoso. He was born to live with boxing and is also married to the daughter of one of the great champions of the history of Mexican boxing, Efren Alacran Torres. He started in international boxing business with the success of his great fighter, Óscar “Chololo” Larios, who became WBC super bantamweight and featherweight champion. * * * The Reynosos have created, molded, and polished a firm relationship with Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. They have been together for more than 15 years now and have achieved extraordinary accomplishments in boxing in an exemplary relationship. Eddy is transforming novice boxers into topnotch fighters, ably guiding the ring exploits of several champions including Julio César “Rey” Martínez, the WBC flyweight champion, Ryan Garcia, the WBC interim lightweight champion, and former WBO featherweight champion Oscar Valdez. * * * Former two division champion Carl Frampton is very surprised with Ryan Garcia's desire to step in the ring with Manny Pacquiao. “This is massive. If this fight gets made, you have to give Ryan Garcia credit, it’s a brave fight to take because Manny Pacquiao, although he's not the fighter he once was, if Luke Campbell can drop Ryan Garcia, [then] Manny Pacquiao can knock him out. This is a risky fight," Frampton stated on his Youtube channel. * * * “If Ryan Garcia goes to that level and beats a hero of mine, an absolute superstar in Manny Pacquiao - he puts himself [right up there] with Canelo Alvarez, who is the number one fighter on the planet, in terms of being the boxing superstar... just the top guy in boxing, he is pay-per-view - and Ryan Garcia would be number two. If he beats Manny Pacquiao he becomes number two in pay-per-view," Frampton was quoted by Boxingscene.com. * * * Lakers star Anthony Davis is questionable for the game against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Monday with tendonosis of his right Achilles tendon, as announced. Davis had medical imaging on the injury, which made sure the Achilles tendon is in good shape. But the tightness in his right leg is a concern for the nine-year veteran. Davis' scoring (26.1 to 22.3), rebounds (9.3 to 8.6) and blocks (2.3 to 1.9) all went down from last season, according to ESPN. Davis scored 30 points in the Lakers' double-overtime win over the Detroit Pistons on Saturday, with five rebounds, three assists and two blocks in 45 minutes of playing time. * * * During the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics, Hidilyn Diaz won the weightlifting silver medal of the women's 53 kg category, after successfully attaining a lift of 88 kg in her second attempt of the snatch placing sixth and 111 kg and 112 kg in the first and second attempts, respectively, in the clean and jerk event placing second. Diaz's silver-medal finish in 2016 was a historic accomplishment for the Philippines, being the first medal won by a Filipino female, the country's first medal in a regular sport at the Olympics, and the first non-boxing medal since 1936, when Miguel White won the bronze medal in the men's 400 metres hurdles.
