Noynay following in Elorde's footsteps?

PhilBoxing.com

Joe Noynay and manager Bebot Elorde.

There are ominous signs that WBO No. 5 superfeatherweight Joe (The Jaw Breaker) Noynay is following in the late Flash Elorde?s footsteps. First, Noynay comes from Elorde?s hometown of Bogo, Cebu. Second, Noynay is a southpaw like Elorde. Third, Noynay fights in the same 130-pound weight division where Elorde reigned as world champion from 1960 to 1967. And lastly, Noynay is managed by Elorde?s son Gabriel (Bebot) Elorde, Jr.

Noynay, 23, has been offered a $30,000 purse by Japanese promoter Akihiko Honda to face Kenichi Ogawa in Tokyo on Sept. 7 but his manager Elorde said he?s s turning it down. ?It?s too soon for Joe to fight,? said Elorde who took over Noynay?s contract from Japanese Takashi Misako when it expired last year. ?He just fought a few weeks ago (July 12). Besides, I?m hoping the WBO will rank Joe No. 1 after beating (Satoshi) Shimizu. He?s now knocked out two Japanese fighters in a row. If Joe becomes the mandatory challenger, we?ll fight the champion (Jamel Herring) right away.?

Elorde said Noynay reminds him of his father. ?May asim siya,? he said. ?He?s from Daddy?s hometown. He?s a smart fighter like Daddy. He?s tall for a superfeatherweight at 5-8. I think he?ll be a world champion.? Throughout the years he?s been involved in boxing, Elorde has produced only one world titlist, former WBO minimumweight ruler Eric Jamili who reigned in 1997-98. His two brothers Johnny and Marty have also managed only one world champion each----former WBF minimumweight titleholder Ronnie Magramo with Johnny and former IBF flyweight king Rolando Bohol with Marty.

Noynay?s last victim Shimizu had won eight straight fights, all by KO, before running into him. The 5-10 1/2 London Olympic bronze medalist was dropped twice in the first round and surrendered in the sixth with a badly swollen right eye. Noynay?s previous victim Kosuke Saka was also floored twice in the first round and was stopped at 1:15 of the second. Noynay?s record is now 18-2-1, with 7 KOs. Of the 11 fighters he outpointed, Noynay scored knockdowns in four of those bouts.

Noynay turned pro in 2013 and was unbeaten in his first 11 outings. His big break came in 2017 when he repulsed previously undefeated Jinxiang Pan on an eighth round technical decision to win the WBO Asia Pacific Youth and WBC Asian Boxing Council Silver superfeatherweight titles in Zhongshan, China. He now holds the WBO Asia Pacific 130-pound crown.

?He was managed by Misako for five years then asked if I could take over,? said Elorde. ?Joe comes from a poor, broken family. His parents split up when he was a boy and he was raised by his grandfather with whom he still lives in Bogo. With the $20,000 purse he got for the Shimizu fight, he?s fixing up his grandfather?s house. Honda wants him to fight Ogawa and when I turned it down, he asked if I wanted a bigger purse. It?s not the purse. I just think it?s too soon for Joe to fight again.?

Ogawa, 31, scored a split 12-round decision over Tevin Farmer for the IBF superfeatherweight title in Las Vegas in 2017 but the outcome was later ruled a No Contest after the Japanese tested positive for androstanediol, a banned steroid. Ogawa did not fight last year but has come back to win over two Filipinos Roldan Alden and Glenn Medura.

Elorde said Noynay, trained by Artcher Villamor, is ready for Herring any time, any place. Herring, 33, is a former London Olympian and US Marine who wrested the WBO superfeatherweight title on a unanimous 12-round decision over Japan?s Masayuki Ito in Florida last May. Noynay has won his last six fights. His only losses were a close but unanimous eight-round decision to Japan?s Reiya Abe in 2017 and a technical decision to Richard Pumicpic the year before. Noynay was docked a point for an accidental headbutt and the fight with Pumicpic would?ve ended in a draw if not for the deduction.
