Nava, Frayna shine in Asian Continental "blitz" chess

Two Filipino chess players were recently named among the most outstanding Pinoy wood pushers in the blitz chess competition at the conclusion of the 17th Asian Continental Chess Championships (2nd Manny Pacquiao Cup) at the Tiara Oriental Hotel in Makati City on Tuesday.
International Master Roderick Nava placed 9th overall after beating fellow six pointers GM Susanto Megaranto of Indonesia and IM Shamsiddin Vokhidov of Uzbekistan in the tie break points.
Nava's campaign here is being supported by Carmona mayor Dahlia Loyola, Cavite gov. Crispin "Boying" Remulla, LPU athletic director Hercules Calanta, and De la Salle Dasmarinas sports director Fidel Rojales.
GM Alireza Firouzja of Iran, meantime won the blitz title with 7.5 points. GM Amin Tabatabaei of Iran settled for second place with 7.0 points.
Woman Grandmaster Janelle Mae Frayna, on the other hand, took 4th position after edging fellow six pointers Zhang Xiao of China, WIM Catherine Perena-Secopito of the Philippines, WGM Gong Qianyun of Singapore and WGM Thi Kim Phung Vo of Vietnam in a tie break points in the women's division.
WGM Wang Jue of China took the crown with 7.5 points followed by 2nd place WGM Thi Bao Tram Hoang of Vietnam with 7.0 points.
In the standard competition, GM Wei Yi of China is this year's Asian Continental Chess Championships winner winning the gold medal. GM Amin Tabatabaei of Iran took the silver while GM Le Quang Liem of Vietnam went home the bronze medal. The triumvirate tallied 6.5 points.
IM Rout Padmini of India won the gold in the women's side with a better tie break against fellow 7.0 pointers WGM Qianyun Gong of Singapore who contended for the silver medal.IM Pham Le Thao Nguyen of Vietnam won the bronze with 6.5 points.-Marlon Bernardino-
