SPORTS ROUNDUP 18: BAD LUCK HOUNDS PH BOXING TEAM IN ASIAD

PhilBoxing.com

Mario Fernandez.
Lady luck continues to frown on Filipino boxers in the ongoing 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta and Palembang, Indonesia. 2014 Incheon Asian Games bronze medalist Mario Fernandez was knocked out with less than a minute left in the third and final round during his bantamweight preliminary bout against Jaafar Abdulridha Ali Al Sudani of Iraq in the round of 32 yesterday.

Fernandez, 25-years-old, who won the opportunity to advance as he was leading in the judges? scorecards after two rounds.

But he took a solid right that sent him flat on his back. Fernandez tried to recover but had a hard time getting up, prompting the referee to stop the fight.

Fernandez was ahead 20-18 in three of the judges' scorecards, and even if he lost the third round on points, he would still be declared the winner via split decision. But everything went for naught with the heartbreaking KO.

Last Friday, Nesthy Petecio suffered a controversial split decision at the hands of Yin Junhua of China while Joel Bacho also dropped a split decision to Sajjad Kazemzadeh Poshtiri of Iran.

"I know I'm winning,? said Petecio after the disputed decision. ?According to my coach I should avoid being hit, and I did it. She has no clear punch.?

?Bad call, bad scoring, bad decision,? said Richard Gomez, the chef-de-mission of the Philippine delegation. ?If you see the whole...China was badly beaten and yet the score is like that. See, that?s the problem with boxing ? it has beem cooked.?

Judges Kim Jongjin of Korea and Pavel Pavlov of Bulgaria both scored the bout 29-27 for Yin. Ishaguly Meretnyyazov of Turkmenistan had it 29-27 for Petecio, and Hanabusa Katsunori of Japan saw it 30-26, for the Petecio. Johany Maden of France had it tied at 28 but later favored the Chinese.

Meanwhile, for the past twenty years, the Koreans gave heartbreaks to Filipinos in basketball, especially the 1998 and 2002 Asian Games where they knocked Gilas out of the gold medal race. Again the Koreans are heavily favored against Philippines in the knockout quarterfinal on Monday, August 27 at 11 am.

"In our game against China, we were not as efficient," said coach Yeng Guiao. "It was actually Jordan's first game after the NBA Finals with the Cavs. So we're expecting a little bit more efficiency with the Korea game."
