DONAIRE WANTS TO SHUT UP BIG CRITIC! By Salven L. Lagumbay PhilBoxing.com Thu, 22 Nov 2007 World flyweight champion Nonito Donaire wants no less than an emphatic win in his first title defense, as he aims to prove somebody wrong who keeps calling him as a "one-punch wonder." "I'm going to go all-out in this fight. I've trained really, really hard. He keeps on saying I'm a one-punch wonder. Well, I am going to prove him wrong," Donaire said, referring to somebody from his team who expressed doubts on his capabilities as a champion. "When we fought Darchinyan, we had a game plan. We came to beat Darchinyan and that's just what we did. To say that Junjun is a one-punch wonder is a big disrespect," added Nonito Donaire Sr, his son's trainer. Donaire said his December 1 defense against Luis Maldonado will be a showcase. "I've never trained this hard for a fight. My sparring at the ALA Gym has been topnotch. I've sparred with (RP fly champ) Rocky Fuentes, who I think can beat Maldonado if they ever fought. I like this kid Fuentes. He can be a world champ if given the right break," added the 25-year-old world champion. The other fighters at the ALA Gym who helped Donaire get the needed sparring rounds were RP bantam champ Michael Domingo, Louie Bantigue, Reman Salim and Weng Haya. Although not looking past Maldonado, Donaire and his dad said after they take care of the Mexican mandatory challenger, "we're looking at the big guns in the superfly and bantamweight division." It's here where we plan to train for the big boys," enthused Donaire Sr last night during dinner with sportsman Jonathan Guardo minutes after attending a basketball game featuring his team, the Arthro Kontra Arthritis. The Donaires are set to break camp on Saturday, head to San Francisco, before leaving for Connecticut on Tuesday. "We're excited for this fight. We're very, very confident to get a win due to his tremendous conditioning," said Nonito Sr. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Salven L. Lagumbay. |
