SPORTS ROUNDUP 14: PH BASKETBALL WITHDRAWS FROM ASIAN GAMES 2018

PhilBoxing.com

PH coach Yeng Giao.

The Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas decided to withdraw from the 2018 Asian Games men's basketball as it said the organization would like to focus on trying to recover the national team?s image after the fight against the Australian team in the FIBA World Cup Asian Qualifier. The free-for-all resulted in the suspensions of 10 players and two coaches and huge fines for the body.

Yeng Guiao, the designated head coach for the Asian Games, however, has another reason why the SBP decided against sending a Philippine team is that it failed to asseble a competitive team to the quadrennial continental sporting event.

Jordan Clarkson and Christian Standhardinger could not represent the Philippines in the Asian Games because of one eligibility rule that they won?t be able to satisfy. Filipino-American Clarkson, the NBA veteran, is disqualified by Olympic Council of Asia rules in Article 53 which states that athletes participating in the Games must be residents of the country they represent continuously for the past three years. Standhardinger, a Filipino-German player, has lived in the country just more than two months ago.

San Miguel Beermen will defend their title as they battle the Ginebra San Miguel Gin Kings in Game 1 of the 2018 PBA Commissioner's Cup Finals. San Miguel aims for a Grand Slam and will be led by four-time MVP June Mar Fajardo. It is reinforced by import Renaldo Balkman and Christian Standhardinger as backup.

The Gin Kings has Justin Brownlee as its import, now on his third Finals appearance. Ginebra will also parade a healthy Greg Slaughter to compete against Fajardo at the center.

Manny Pacquiao feels younger than ever. In an interview with Jamil Santos of GMA News, the senator said he ?feels like a 27, 28 year old? and that his fans can ?expect more fights to come? from him. Pacquiao won another world title, the WBA regular welterweight belt with a stimulating KO win over Lucas Matthysse, his first short cut win in almost a decade.

?Even now, I turn 40 in December, but I feel like a 27 year old, a 28 year old,? Pacquiao said. ?I can see myself like that, like I?m 27, 28 years old, so I agree that my journey in boxing is not done yet?..so expect more fights to come, giving honor to our country of course and the most important thing is I want to glorify God.?

Houston Rockets still have not made a deal with center Clint Capela, and replaced Trevor Ariza and Luc Richard Mbah a Moute with James Ennis, Michael Carter-Williams, and later, Carmelo Anthony. Houston stretched Golden State Warriors to seven games last May in the western conference finals, but this summer fell behind.

A major injury on Golden State's key players or a sudden rise by Houston could close the gap between the two teams that widened at present. But, Houston playing at its optimal performance is still the second-best team in the NBA behind the Warriors.

For the past three years, triathlete Tim Reed dominated the Cebu City Ironman 70.3 Philippines. He also won the Ironman 70.3 world title in between those victories. The 33-year-old Australian is again expected to win for the fourth straight year when the world renowned triathlon unfolds in Cebu on August 5.

The event will start with the 1.9-kilometer swim leg at the beachfront of Shangri-La Mactan Resort and Spa in Lapu Lapu City. The racers will proceed to the transition area at the Mactan Newton beach for the 90-km bike leg. The 21.2-km run will start and finish at Shangri-La Mactan.
