QUIZON SETTLES FOR 2ND OVERALL; CONCIO 6TH PLACE IN CHINA YOUTH CHESS INTERNATIONAL OPEN TOURNAMENT

MANILA, Philippines---Filipino Fide Master (IM) elect Daniel Quizon pocketed the runner-up honors in the 2018 "Boyi Cup" China Youth Chess International Open Tournament in Harbin, China on Sunday.

The Taytay, Rizal native Quizon, a resident of Dasmarinas, Cavite scored crucial wins against Agibileg Uurtsaikh of Mongolia in the ninth and final round to wrap up his campaign with 7.0 points on seven wins, one loss and one and draw in nine outings.

Grandmaster (GM) Bai Jinshi of China toppled Fide Master (FM) Tugstumur Yesuntumur of Mongolia in the final canto and went home the coveted title. He collected 8.5 points on eight wins and a draw. His only draw at the hands of Quizon in the 8th and penultimate round on Saturday. Quizon who honed his skills under the guidance of his personal chess coach/trainer candidate master Herny Villanueva also won his 7th round match against WIM Uuriintuya Uurtsaikh of Mongolia on Saturday.

Another Filipino Fide Master (IM) elect Michael Concio Jr. scored three consecutive wins to finish with 6.5 points on six wins, two loses and a draw. Concio from Los Banos, Laguna but a resident of Dasmarinas, Cavite bested Wang Jingyu of China in the seventh round, Yu Feiran of China in the eight round and WIM Uuriintuya Uurtsaikh of Mongolia in the ninth round.

After the tie break points was applied, Concio finished overall 6th place with fellow 6.5 pointers eventual 4th place Agibileg Uurtsaikh of Mongolia, 5th place Ning Kaiyu of China, 7th place Cheng Yuanda of China and 8th place Hu Yu A. of China. Peng Hongchi of China took overall 3rd place with 7.0 points.

National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) Vice President Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe hailed the triumph of Quizon and Concio.

"This proves once again that Filipinos can be at par with the world's best woodpusher athletes. With ample training and preparation, we can even become top contender in the world stage like Wesley So," said Orbe, also founding president of the newly-formed Philippine Executive Chess Association (PECA).

Jerlyn Mae Moralde San Diego of Dasmarinas, Cavite landed overall 19th place with 5.5 points while Woman Candidate Master Kylen Joy Mordido also from Dasmarinas, Cavite settled overall 22nd place with 5.0 points.

National Coach International Master (IM) Roel Abelgas would like to thank Dasmarinas, Cavite mayor Elpidio "Pidi" Barzaga Jr. and congresswoman Jenny Barzaga for shouldering the round trip ticket and allowances of the Filipino youth players and the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC) and the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP) who help their hotel accomodation.-
