CAN DONAIRE, SR. GUIDE CASEY MORTON TO A WORLD TITLE? By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Wed, 22 Nov 2017 SUZHOU, CHINA ? Casey Morton pounced and pounded her Thai opponent Daorueng Pakkhenathang right from the opening bell. Morton pressed the action, landing to the body and head. Daorueng dropped to one knee and Referee Mekin Sumon signaled the end at the one minute and fifty second mark. There was a familiar face yelling instructions in Morton?s corner ? Nonito ?Dodong? Donaire,Sr., the father and former trainer of five-division world title-holder Nonito ?The Filipino Flash? Donaire. Morton?s win was well applauded by the Chinese fans that were there at the Suzhou Sports Center. She was in the featured undercard bout before the two WBO regional title fights. ?It was incredible, it was like being in a movie,? Morton told this writer after the show, ?I did not expect they would put up this huge production, all the lights, the dancers.? This was the first time Donaire, Sr trained her for a fight. She described him as an amazing coach. ?She?s afraid of my voice,? Donaire, Sr laughed, ?I keep yelling at her ? you?re too slow.? Casey, who is based in California, fought in the Philippines last June and won by unanimous decision against another Thai boxer, Phannaluk Kongsang, at the Mandaue City Sports Complex in Cebu. Her record is now 6W-0L-3D, 1KO. Morton, a.k.a. the Lady Hawaiian Punch, dreams of fighting for a world title someday, the sooner the better. The elder Donaire has an impressive resume. Other than his son, in 2009, he was tapped to bring experience to the corner of Marvin Sonsona, who would dethrone Puerto Rican Jose Lopez for the WBO world super flyweight title. One of his prot?g?s, Joebert Alvarez, topped the light flyweight division of the Philippine boxing reality show/tournament ?Buhay Boksingero? in 2011 and would go the distance against Mexican Juan Francisco Estrada in a losing effort in 2014. Morton is the second female boxer the elder Donaire has trained, the first being Ana ?The Hurricane? Julaton, who would go on to win titles with the WBO and IBA. So, Donaire, Sr. could very well be the trainer who can make her dream come true. OTHER SUZHOU RESULTS: In the main event, Wenfeng Ge beat former IBF world flyweight champ Amnat Ruenroeng of Thailand for the vacant WBO Oriental super flyweight title. Scores ? Yuan Yunzi and Tao Zhuwu - 117-111, Mekin Sumon ? 118-110. The referee was Robert Hoyle (USA). Fei Hu Wang knocked down Badri Kereselidze twice in round two and won by TKO. Time 2:17. Wang was awarded the WBO China National super middleweight belt. Zhou Jie beat Liu Yixin by unanimous verdict, Thai Atchariya Wirojanasunobol won against Li Jiajia by unanimous decision. The fights were officiated by the PBC of China and the CPBA.The WBO bouts were supervised by WBO VP for Asia Pacific Leon Panoncillo. Photo: Nonito "Dodong" Donaire, Sr and Casey Morton.
