CANELO ALVAREZ VS. JAIME MUNGIA TALE OF THE TAPE By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sat, 04 May 2024 Mexican boxer Saúl "Canelo" Álvarez stakes his undisputed world super middleweight title against countryman Jaime Munguía on May 4 in Las Vegas, a day before the Mexicans celebrate their national holiday, popularly observed as an event to eat tacos, drink and indulge in festivities. Cinco de Mayo commemorates Mexico’s victory over France in the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862 and Álvarez made fighting on that weekend a regular annual schedule. “I feel so proud about this fight because it’s two Mexicans on one of the best weekends in Las Vegas. Everybody is watching us. The first time two Mexicans were fighting for the spirit, for the four belts,” Álvarez was quoted by CNN. “I feel so proud about this fight.” On May 7, 2022, Álvarez suffered a shock defeat to Russian Dmitry Bivol for his WBA (Super) light heavyweight title, but he avenged that loss with three consecutive victories over Jermall Charlo, John Ryder and Gennady Golovkin rematch by unanimous decision. Álvarez will fight another Mexican since his unanimous win over Julio César Chávez Jr. in 2017.
