GRANDMASTER Eugene Torre defeated IM Hernan C. Van Riemsdijk of Brazil in the tenth round Saturday to gain a share of the lead in the 27th World Senior Chess Championship 2017 (50+ and 65+ Open-men and women) in Acqui Terme, Italy.

The win moved Torre to top with 7.5 points, tying top seed GM Anatoly Vaisser of France, GM Evgeny Sveshnikov of Russia, GM Vlastimil Jansa of Czech Republic, GM Lothar Vogt of Germany and IM Arkady Shevelev of Israel in the 65 and over division.

Vaisser trounced countryman GM Vladimir Okhotnik, Sveshnikov downed former solo leader Jansa, Vogt routed FM Christoph Frick of France and Shevelev split the point with GM Evgeni Vasiukov of France.

In the 11th and final round, Vaisser will face Torre on Board 1, Sveshnikov opposite Arkady on Board 2 and Vogt goes up against Jansa on Board 3.

Philippine executive chess champion Atty. Cliburn Anthony A. Orbe, who watched the game on live streaming at chessbomb.com, is very confident that Torre will put up a good fight against Vaisser for the coveted chess title.

After Round 10, Vaisser is still undefeated with five wins and five draws against Torre's seven wins, a draw and two loses.

The 66-years-old Torre is fresh from winning the 2017 Asian Senior Chess Championships last month in Auckland, New Zealand.

Another Filipino entry GM Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr., meantime settled for a truce with GM Giorgie Bagaturov of Georgia after 26 moves of Sicilian skirmish to raise his total to 7.5 points, the same output of GM Zurab Sturua of Georgia, winner over IM Oliver Brendel of Germany after 23 moves of English Opening.

The 55-years-old Antonio, the pride of Calapan, Oriental Mindoro is looking for a decent finish by facing IM Spartaco Sarno of Italy in the final round. Sarno is coming off a big win against FM Rolf Bergstrom of Sweden after 42 moves of English Opening.
Tournament favorite GM Julio Granda Zuniga of Peru continued his winning run after beating IM Alexander Reprintsev of Ukraine after 37 moves of Sicilian defense.

Thus, Zuniga remain on top with 9.0 points, full point ahead over second place GM Eric Prie of France who brought downed IM Devaki V Prasad of India after 24 moves of London System Opening. Zuniga need only a draw against Bagaturov in the last round to secure the title.
