PhilBoxing.com

BAYAWAN, NEGROS ORIENTAL - The 3rd One Visayas Boy Scouts Jamboree opened here last Tuesday with the local government of Bayawan City and the Negros Oriental BSP Council playing host to more than 4,000 Boy Scouts and adult leaders at the city's odorless sanitary landfill at Sitio Maninihon, Barangay Omod. The venue is a sprawling man-made forest area which also serves as the ecological center of this city.

The gathering was participated in by delegates from Eastern Visayas Scouting Region such as Cebu, Bohol, Leyte, Southern Leyte, Biliran, Tacloban, Northern Samar and host Negros Oriental-Siquijor. The Western Visayas Scouting Region contingents comprise of Negros Occidental, Bacolod, Iloilo, Guimaras, Aklan, Antique and Capiz.

According to Boy Scout of the Philippines (BSP) Negros Oriental-Siquijor Council Acting Administrator and Council Treasurer George Villamor, Bayawan City has allocated P2 million for the improvement of the venue?s structures, in a report by Philippine Information Agency.

The theme of the jamboree is ?Growth and Stability? and it is open for Boy Scouts aged 11 to 18 years old, should be in good health, and must be equipped with camping gears.

The jamboree did provide the Boy Scouts outdoor life experience and foster cooperation, friendship, and camaraderie with fellow Scouts. Onsite modules are set for the campers which include obstacle journey, extreme challenge, rappelling, global development village, sanitary landfill/solid waste management, water survival and rescue, sports on Pencak Silat and Arnis, among others.
The night activities include a Talents Unlimited Youth Jam Concert held on Thursday, the Grand Camp Fire which is scheduled Friday evening, and the Closing Ceremony which is on Saturday. The contingents will leave the camp on Sunday.

In the obstacle journey and extreme challenge, the Boy Scouts were able to crawl on the mud, traversed the monkey bridge, and rapel on the ropes. It was the most challenging activity which measures the physical determination and mental perseverance of the participants. After the Boy Scouts have undergone the module they were covered all over with mud.

The opening ceremony on Tuesday was graced by Bayawan City Mayor Pryde Henry Teves, who himself was a Boy Scout, in his student days, and it was he who initiated and worked on the successful hosting of the event.

The 1st One Visayas Jamboree was held at Camp Danao, Maasin City, Southern Leyte in 2010 with this writer as the Camp Chief. The 2nd One Visayas Jamboree happened at Panaad Park, Bacolod City in 2012.

Before the One Visayas, Eastern Visayas and Western Visayas Scouting Regions hosted their jamborees separately.
