CRAWFORD VACATES SUPER LIGHTWEIGHT BELTS AND MOVES TO WELTERWEIGHT; IS NOW MANDATORY TO HORN-CORCORAN WINNER By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Fri, 27 Oct 2017 Aboard Norwegian Sky in the Bahamas ? Former unified super lightweight champion and Ring's No. 2 pound for pound fighter on the planet Terence Crawford has now officially vacated his WBO, WBA and WBC belts and has moved up to welterweight and the WBO, in an executive session during the ongoing 30th convention here, voted to install the Omaha, Nebraska native as the mandatory challenger to the winner of the Horn-Corcoran world welterweight title fight that was scheduled for December 13 which the boxing body also voted to sanction. Crawford (32-0-0, 23KOs) last fought and stopped Julius Indongo of Namibia in Lincoln, Nebraska last August 19 to unify the WBO, WBC, WBA and IBF world super lightweight belts. By the end of August, Crawford gave the IBF belt after he was ordered to defend it against mandatory challenger Sergey Lipinets. Horn (17-0-1, 11KOs) captured the WBO welterweight title in a huge and controversial upset over Filipino boxing legend Manny Pacquiao last July 2 in Brisbane, Australia. After Pacquiao passed on to exercise his right for an immediate rematch, Horn's camp picked the No. 10 ranked Gary Corcoran (17-1-0, 7KOs) of the UK to be his opponent on Dec. 13 at the Brisbane Convention Center in Brisbane, Australia. WBO president Francisco 'Paco' Valcarcel said that as WBO's super champion in the super lightweight division, Crawford deserves to become the mandatory challenger of the welterweight division as Crawford moves up in weight. Crawford, who is here to receive his award as the WBO fighter of the year, told Philboxing that he is looking forward to fight the winner of the Horn-Corcoran fight and if he was to face Horn, Crawford said, ?I'm ready to go out there and win the title. Horn is very tough and very rugged but at the same time he makes a lot of mistakes which I can capitalize.? The WBO also ruled that the winner of the Horn-Corcoran fight will have to face Crawford 90 days after the December 13 fight. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Dong Secuya. |
