CRAWFORD LOOKS TO FIGHT THE HORN-CORCORAN WINNER AND BEYOND By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Mon, 09 Oct 2017 Top Rank CEO Bob Arum thinks Terence Crawford fights next in February or March, probably against WBO welterweight titlist Jeff Horn, who will possibly return to action in December. ?Terence Crawford, after he fights Horn, hopefully wins that fight, we?re gonna look for guys like Keith Thurman, and maybe Danny Garcia," Arum told Michael Woods of badlefthook.com. He thinks there will be a big fight in a year or more from now with Crawford and Errol Spence. * * * Arum is no longer sure about Manny Pacquiao fighting again, so the 85-year-old promoter is eyeing a fight between Jeff Horn against Englishman Gary Corcoran in Brisbane possibly on December 15. A victory for Horn could lead to the much-awaited break to showcase himself in the US. With a win, he will fight again in March next year, possibly against Pacquiao but more likely against the devastating Crawford, an American fighter with 32 wins in 32 fights. * * * Crawford, voted the top pound for pound boxer by the Boxing Writers Association of America, is also the undisputed champion of the junior welterweight division when he brutaly stopped Julius Indongo. However, he is likely to move up to the welterweight division, where Arum is working for Crawford's shot at Horn?s WBO title. Such a fight could open up a great opportunity for a US sojourn for Horn. But Crawford will be a solid wall of a challenger for the Australian. * * * Like Pacquiao, Crawford is regarded as one of the best fighters in the sport. Pacquiao was 38 when he faced Horn but Crawford is only 30 and in the prime of his fighting career. Even trainer Freddie Roach admitted Crawford is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. The BWAA considers Crawford at present the best in the boxing world ahead of another Top Rank fighter Vasyl Lomachenko. * * * Asked whether Horn was ready to take on a fighter as dangerous as Crawford, Arum said: ?He has to be. The WBO is going to make him fight a mandatory fight. It?s either going to be a rematch with Pacquiao or Crawford." He thinks Pacquiao is going to hang up his gloves. "My gut feeling from talking to him is that I just think. I don?t know, he hasn?t told me yet, he hasn?t really decided. But my guess is he is going to call it a day. It is just a guess.? * * * Corcoran won 17 of his 18 fights, but he has only seven wins by knockout. His only loss is an 11th-round knockout to Liam Williams in July last year. His aggressive fighting makes him an exciting boxer against Horn. Promoter Dean Lonergan did not confirm yet the Corcoran fight as venues and dates are still being negotiated. But the Englishman posted on social media about his coming match with Horn. * * The stakes are high for the Australian as he contemplates big-money fights against the best fighters in the world. Horn can abort those plans by pulling off another massive upset, although first he must take care of business against Corcoran. Arum is already looking beyond Corcoran as he plans for Crawford to beat Horn. ?Everyone thought Manny Pacquiao was going to beat Jeff Horn,? Lonergan said. ?That wasn?t the case.? * * * According to Las Vegas matchmaker Sean Gibbons if everything is put into its proper place, Jerwin Ancajas might become the next big thing in Philippine boxing after Manny Pacquiao. Ancajas has to be matched against the right opponents and must be shown with enough TV exposure. Gibbons told Joaquin Henson in an interview that Ancajas, the IBF world junior bantamweight king will be the ?future of Philippine boxing.? * * * ?I think among the Filipino world champions today, Jerwin has the most potential to make it big in the global market as an attraction,? said Gibbons who was previously working with Bob Arum. "I respect Donnie Nietes and Milan Melindo but Jerwin?s division is the hottest in boxing at the moment with guys like Srisaket Sor Rungvisai, Juan Francisco Estrada, Naoya Inoue and Carlos Cuadras.? * * * Gibbons matched Ancajas, 25, against Irish fighter Jamie Conlan, 30, in Belfast, Northern Ireland on November 18. Conlan, IBF No. 5 and WBO No. 3, KO'd 11 foes in 19 pro wins without a loss. A victory over Conlan could lead to Ancajas' much-awaited showdown in the US. ?Everything will depend on how he performs against Conlan. The plan is to eventually bring Jerwin to the US the same way Manny broke through," said Gibbons. * * * Mark Beaumont is a British cyclist, adventurer, and documentary maker. He established the record for cycling round the world on September 28, 2017. On February 18, 2010 Beaumont completed an adventure to cycle across the Americas, cycling from Anchorage, Alaska, USA to Ushuaia in Southern Argentina. In the summer of 2011 Beaumont joined a six-man boat team to row from Resolute Bay in the Nunavut Territory, Canada to the 1996 location of the North Magnetic Pole. . * * * On February 1, 2012 Beaumont and his team of rowers were rescued from the Atlantic Ocean after the boat they rowed capsized during an attempt at crossing from Morocco to Barbados. On May 21, 2015 he rode from Cairo to Cape Town (10,000 km) and broke the World Record for fastest solo ride for the length of Africa by finishing in 42 days and 8 hours. He also climbed the highest peaks in North America (McKinley) and South America (Aconcagua). Click here to view a list of other articles written by Maloney L. Samaco. |
