AMONSOT LOSES TO PORTILLO BY THIRD ROUND TKO

PhilBoxing.com

Carlos Manuel Portillo of Asuncion, Paraguay scored an upset third round stoppage of WBA No. 3 contender Filipino-Australian Czar Amonsot at the Melbourne Pavillion, Flemington, Victoria, Australia Friday. Amonsot was dropped in round three and the referee declared Portillo the winner by TKO at 2:41 of round. Amonsot was heavily favored to win because of his vast experience and hometown advantage.

But Portillo showed his hard hitting ability to wrest the interim WBA Oceania super lightweight title. Portillo improved his record to 19 wins with no losses with 15 wins by knockout with high KO rate of 79%. While Amonsot dropped to 34 wins, 22 by KO, 4 losses, 3 draws and 1 no contest. This is the first time that Amonsot lost since living in Australia where he had a 16-fight unbeaten streak, winning several regional titles and becoming the sparring partner of Jeff Horn.

Boxu Potts, Joel Campusano and Hector Hernandez teamed up to deliver a joint report on the status of the WBC amateur program. Campusano?s home state of Illinois approved a WBC sanctioned tournament, aborting a move by USA Boxing to block such a tournament which were not be held under their supervision. The WBC is also lobbying the return of amateur boxing back to the use of head gear which was not used in the last Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.

The World Boxing Council might create an 18th division, according to its President Mauricio Sulaiman. They are experimenting with the idea of breaking up the heavyweight division in two, the heavyweight and the super heavyweight. Sulaiman discussed that the new heavyweight division would be established above the cruiserweight limit of 200 lbs., but what are its limits and where the super heavyweight class would start is still under further study.

The cruiserweight division was created to prevent boxers who were over 175 lbs. from fighting heavyweights. The cruiserweight class was set for 190 lbs. and later to 200 lbs. so smaller heavyweights could slide down to cruiserweight. The WBC was the first boxing body to recognize the cruiserweight. But bigger is not always better. Smaller heavyweights, like Chris Byrd, Evander Holyfield, David Haye, and Mike Tyson have defeated bigger foes.

Former heavyweight world champion Wladimir Klitschko said the crossover bout between Floyd Mayweather Jr and UFC star Conor McGregor was great for the sport of boxing. "I think it was great for the sport, that you can combine an MMA fighter in the boxing ring, even if he has not so much of a chance under boxing rules," he told Omnisport. "I think it was good for the sport because there was a lot of tremendous interest around the world. So it's all good."

Vitali Klitschko wants to avenge brother Wladimir?s defeat to Anthony Joshua and make a spectacular come back to boxing. Joshua pounded Wladimir into retirement on April 29 before 90,000 audience at Wembley Arena. Vitali labelled Joshua?s win as ?lucky." Wladimir actually dropped Joshua in the sixth round, but he didn?t go for the knockout towards the end of that round. Joshua was able to recover from the knockdown in round six to stop Wladimir in round 11.

?It was great fight of Wladimir and Joshua, great fight," FightHubTV. "I feel a bit guilty, because I told to Wladimir in the corner please don?t be so active in round number six when Wladimir sent Joshua to the floor. I expect a big-muscled athlete to not recover, I was surprised, Joshua recovered so fast and stopped Wladimir. If I didn?t tell him to stop, then Wladimir might have knocked him out, six or maybe round number seven.?

The year is very discouraging for former world champion Amir Khan (31-4, 19 KOs), in experiences in and out of the ring. His proposed fight against Manny Pacquiao was aborted in April. He separated with his wife Faryal Makhdoom after accusing her of cheating on him. But the British boxing star is willing to put all the "wrongdoings" behind as he used his official Instagram account to apologise for being inactive in the ring, promising to make a ring comeback soon.

Khan has been inactive since losing by a 6th round knockout to Canelo Alvarez. "Can?t wait to get back in the ring, where I belong. I apologise to all my fans for not being active for a year. I want this more than anyone. Time to make my comeback, right to the top where I belong. A lot has happened in my life and it?s time I put everything behind me. I apologise to everyone for all the wrongdoings, time to move on and do what I do best," Khan told his followers.
