AMONSOT FACES PORTILLO OF PARAGUAY FOR WBA OCEANIA TITLE ON OCTOBER 6

Amonsot.

Czar Amonsot is set to face undefeated Carlos Manuel Portillo of Paraguay for the interim WBA Oceania light welterweight title on October 6 in The Melbourne Pavilion, Flemington, Australia. Portillo has 18 wins with no losses in all his 18 fights with 14 wins by knockout at a KO rate of 78%. The 24-year-old fighter from Asuncion, Paraguay had his pro boxing debut on February 2013.

Amonsot was once one of the young prize-fighters of the famed ALA boxing stable of Cebu. The rising fighter from Bohol was known for his blonde hair and fearless style and became one of the favorites among Filipino boxing fans. On January 2004, he made his professional debut and won by technical knockout against Rey Lomoljo in the fifth round of their six-round fight.

In 2007, Amonsot faced Indonesian Simson Butar-Butar supposedly to avenge his only loss. At that time, ALA decided to part ways with him because he abused himself and was poorly prepared for the fight. Amonsot was stripped of his WBO Asia Pacific junior lightweight title when he was five pounds above the 130-pound limit. Butar-Butar knocked him out in just 47 seconds into the first round and could not beat the count, causing a big disappointment for his Boholano home fans.

Amonsot was given another chance by the ALA Gym. He was able to fight for a world title against Australian Michael Katsidis for the interim WBO lightweight belt at the Mandalay Bay Resort in Las Vegas, Nevada. He fought relentlessly against the Australian champion but his efforts were not enough, losing a unanimous decision A CT-scan showed that Amonsot suffered a clot in his brain and it stopped his career for almost two years.

Many thought it was the end of the career of Amonsot. But in 2009, Amonsot returned to the ring after being cleared by the doctor. Since 2010, Amonsot has resided and fought in Australia where he won and defended several regional titles, staying unbeaten in 16 fights. He also acted as a sparring partner for Jeff Horn in his preparation for the title fight against Manny Pacquiao. Amonsot now has 34 wins, 22 by KO, 3 losses and 3 draws.

Golden Boy Promotions announced that the pay-per-view sales for Canelo- Golovkin will be higher than 1.3 million when all cable and satellite distributors submit their final numbers. Delayed report on sales is now the common practice for PPV fights. Promoters and TV executives want to get the maximum number. They need few extra weeks to get the complete reports from the small cable companies which HBO and Showtime used to distribute these fights.

The promoters hope to add another 200,000 buys out of those companies late to report their Canelo-Golovkin figures and bring the total to 1.5 million. That still wouldn?t change the opinions of those who?ve deemed 1.3 million buys an indisputable failure for what was billed as the ?real? pay-per-view fight for boxing fans in 2017. Regardless, the buy rate reported thus far is neither the smashing success De La Hoya predicted, nor the complete flop others would have you believe.

* * *

De La Hoya projected that Canelo-Golovkin would be ?close to 3 million? buys. Most promoters and television executives like former HBO boss Mark Taffet and Showtime chief Stephen Espinoza would not publicly predict PPV buy rates. Aside from his Mayweather fight in May 2013, only one of Canelo?s bouts exceeded 1 million PPV buys, that was his annihilation of fellow Mexican Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. last May.

According to Boxing Scene, the nine non-heavyweight fights which recorded more PPV buys than Canelo-Golovkin since start of PPV broadcasting in 1991:
1. Mayweather-Pacquiao on May 2015 - 4.6 million
2. Mayweather-McGregor on August 2017 - 4.4 million (still unofficial)
3. Mayweather-De La Hoya on May 2007 - 2.4 million
4. Mayweather-Alvarez on September 2013 - 2.2 million
5. Mayweather-Cotto on May 2012 - 1.5 million
6. De La Hoya-Trinidad on September 1999 - 1.4 million
7. Mayweather-Mosley on May 2010 - 1.4 million
8. Pacquiao-Marquez III on November 2011 - 1.4 million
9. Pacquiao-Mosley on May 2011 - 1.34 million

Oscar Valdez successfully defended his WBO featherweight title by unanimous decision over the very active Genesis Servania in twelve exciting rounds. Both Valdez and Servania scored knockdowns and this bout came after Valdez went twelve gruelling rounds against Miguel Marriaga last April. Trainer Manuel Robles said they needed some overall improvements and he feels that Oscar gets "a little bit too excited."

"Defensively, he has great footwork, great mobility, great upper body movement but he just gets a little carried away because he likes to give people what they want - which is excitement," Robles added. The trainer said Valdez wanted to please his home fans. "Maybe fighting in Tucson, maybe the crowd, the fans really got to him in a sense that he wanted to give them excitement, give them what they wanted."

Robles added the most important thing is for Oscar to control is emotions and to fight with "'controlled aggression." There have been talks circulating about Valdez fighting former featherweight champion Carl Frampton someday which Robles readily welcomes. "Absolutely, because I know what I have," he answered positively. "I know what I'm working with, I know what I'm dealing with. I believe that Oscar has the potential to fight Carl Frampton next if it had to be."
