GOLOVKIN-ALVAREZ HAS THE THIRD HIGHEST TICKET SALES IN BOXING HISTORY

PhilBoxing.com

The middleweight championship fight between Canelo Alvarez and Gennady Golovkin was the third highest revenue from tickets sales in boxing history. According to the Nevada State Athletic Commission, the Alvarez-Golovkin match earned $27,059,850 in revenues from 17,318 tickets sold. Golden Boy Promotions determined the official attendance on fight night as 22,358, a record crowd at the T-Mobile Arena.

Floyd Mayweather Jr.-Manny Pacquiao and Mayweather-Conor McGregor fights are the only two boxing matches that have surpassed the ticket sales of Alvarez-Golovkin. Mayweather-Pacquiao sold $71,198,500 in 16,219 tickets purchased. Mayweather-McGregor made $55,414,865 from 13,094 tickets bought. Alvarez-Golovkin placed third ahead of Mayweather-Alvarez that earned $20,003,150 from 16,146 tickets sold.

The Mayweather-Alvarez match was held in September 2013 at MGM Grand Garden Arena and so does the No. 1 Mayweather-Pacquiao "Fight of the Century" on May 2015. While the No. 2 top grossing fight Mayweather-McGregor tussle was fought at the T-Mobile Arena. The new Las Vegas Strip venue held its first boxing event in May 2016 and can accommodate roughly 5,000 more fans for boxing than MGM Grand Garden Arena.

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (49-1-2, 34 KOs) declared that he wants a rematch with IBF, IBO, WBA, WBC middleweight champion Gennady Golovkin (37-0-1, 33 KOs) in 2018 and he wants that fight to happen before any other opponent. Canelo is not going to come back until May 2018, during Cinco De Mayo weekend. Golovkin has to wait until May or make a voluntary defense in December.

"I want it to be my first fight of 2018. I do not want another fight that is not the tiebreaker with Golovkin, and that's what we're going to try to do," Canelo told BoxingScene. While many believe Golovkin had won the decision, Canelo thinks otherwise. "I feel that I was the winner, but that's boxing. I told everyone that it would be a great fight, I feel very happy with what I did, the people were happy and now they want to see the rematch," Canelo said.

The Canelo Alvarez-Gennady Golovkin middleweight title fight produced 1.3 million pay-per-view buys, the best showing between two world champions since Floyd Mayweather set a PPV record during his 2015 triumph over Manny Pacquiao. The figure was given to the Los Angeles Times by a person familiar with sales, but is unauthorized to speak publicly on the PPV sales.

Golden Boy Promotions President Eric Gomez has started negotiations with Golovkin's team headed by Tom Loeffler of K2 Promotions. Both teams are hoping to come up with an agreement before the year ends. Alvarez was favored by a severely maligned 118-110 scorecard of judge Adalaide Byrd. Canelo swept the final three rounds. This calls for a May 2018 rematch which is urged by almost every boxing afficionado.

The reported PPV sales are the best so far for Golovkin. He did not earn more than 200,000 buys in both his two preceeding pay-per-view fights. But Alvarez's 2013 fight with Mayweather exceeded 2 million buys. Alvarez earned 1 million buys last May in annihilating Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. by a very wide unanimous decision. Canelo also sold 900,000 PPV's in his November 2015 victory over four-division champion Miguel Cotto.

Only nine non-heavyweight fights since boxing began regularly using the pay-per-view in televising bouts in 1991 have resulted in more buys than Alvarez-Golovkin. Each of those eight events included Oscar De La Hoya, Floyd Mayweather Jr. or Manny Pacquiao. With Mayweather already retired and Pacquiao's figting days are numbered , Alvarez is now the only active boxer that can generate 1 million buys or more on the pay-per-view shows.

Bob Arum says that Manny Pacquiao refuses to return to Australia for the Jeff Horn rematch. The fighting senator thinks he was cheated on the scorecards and he also blames the referee for tolerating Horn's dirty tactics which include two head butts causing severe cuts on Pacquiao's eyes. Several international boxing analysts believe Pacquiao connected the more telling blows but the judges were convinced of Horn's more aggressive stance.

Pacquiao wants the second fight to be held in Manila, but the Philippine government will not be releasing any money to host he fight, while Australia is ready to put up millions. The first meeting attracted 51,000 fans to the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane and several cities in Australia are bidding to host the rematch. ?There is no money in the Philippines but there is in Australia,? Arum told Manila Bulletin.

Pacquiao, who is already 38 years old, has 2 wins and 2 losses in his last four fights. Freddie Roach, suggests to him that he fights Horn in a rematch and then retire from the sport for good, win or lose. As of now, Arum says Pacquiao is fully focused on his political career and not even mentioning his career as a boxer. "Manny is not concentrating as a fighter,? Arum said. ?Manny?s doing so many important things as a senator. I don?t know what his plans are in boxing."
