SANTISIMA STOPS WAO IN 5; FULL 'PINOY PRIDE 39' UNDERCARD RESULTS

PhilBoxing.com

CEBU CITY -- Fast rising super bantamweight Jeo 'Santino' Santisima, 20, of Masbate showed maturity and patience in stopping never say die Rex Wao of Baguio City in the 5th round of their scheduled 8 round super bantamweight contest on the undercard of the Melindo-Sakkreerin IBF interim world light flyweight title fight at the Cebu Coliseum here Saturday night. Wao was recipient of heavy punishment from Santisima all night but instead of backing up, Wao kept on coming forward even with a smile on his face asking for more punishment.

Santisima has improved his win-loss-draw record to 12-2-0 with 11 knockouts, 10 of whom he accomplished in his last 10 fights. Wao dropped to 11-4-0, 9KOs.

Santisima (L) connects with a left on Wao.

In the opening round, Santisima connected with a hard right to the head of Wao that buckles Wao's knee in a sign of things to come. Wao tried to impose his will on Santisima by coming forward but Santino calmly kept his stance and connected with hard lefts and rights. Wao connected with a hard right in the opening seconds of the third that buckled Santisima momentarily but the boxer from Masbate came back to inflict more heavy punishment on Wao who at this point it is a wonder why he remained standing. In the 4th, Santisima continued to connect with vicious lefts and rights on Wao as the crowd became uneasy because of the amount of punishment Wao was receiving. Finally in the fifth round, Wao was completely broken down and turned his back on Santisima in a form of surrender after he was tagged with successive vicious body shots. Time: 2:28 of the 5th round.

According to ALA Gym top honcho Antonio Aldeguer, Santisima's next assignments will be against tough Mexicans as Aldeguer will try to position Santisima to meet the elite fighters in his division.

Jimmy Paypa (R) finishes off Jerry Nardo in the 3rd round.

WBO Inter-continental bantamweight champion Jimmy 'Popeye' Paypa knocked out Jerry Nardo with a liver punch at 43 seconds in the 3rd round of their scheduled 8-round super featherweight contest in a slambang affair. Nardo scored a knockdown in the first round with a short right counter which happened with a simultaneous clash of heads with Paypa bloodied with a cut in his left eyebrow and Nardo also bloodied in the head. In the second round, Paypa dropped Nardo with a couple of rights to the head after which Nardo opted to box. In the 3rd round however, Paypa caught Nardo with a vicious left to the liver that sent Nardo curling in pain in the canvas unable to beat the referee's count. Paypa upped his record to 19-3-1 with 7 KOs while Nardo dropped to 21-10-0, 11KOs.

Cataraja (L) made short work of Villaflor.

In the third fight of the evening for 6 rounds flyweight, Kevin Jake Cataraja fought a Filipino for the first time in his young career against John Kenan Villaflor and the highly touted ALA fighter made it a short night as he came out aggressive from the get go. As Villaflor tried to mix it up, Cataraja connected with a wicked left-right combination that hit squarely to the jaw of Villaflor who went down against the ropes in the neutral corner 21 seconds in the opening round. Referee Romar Embodo waived off the contest as he saw Villaflor unfit to continue. Cataraja now improved his record to 5-0-0, 4KOs while Villaflor went down to 6-2-2, 2KOs.

Jerusalem (R) connects with a right on Marfa.

In the second fight of the evening, Melvin 'Gringo' Jerusalem decisioned perennial whipping boy Fabio Marfa over six rounds in their flyweight bout. Marfa was a late replacement and came 5 pounds overweight during Friday's weighin. He wore 10-ounce gloves during the fight. Scores: 60-54, 59-55, 59-55 all in favor of Jerusalem who improved his record to 11-0-0, 7KOs while Marfa dropped to 25-32-4.

Vitor (L) connects against Francisco.

A crowd pleasing match up opened the night as the undefeated Virgel Vitor of the ALA Gym and durable Jonathan Francisco fought in close quarters and toe to toe with neither fighter backing up or resorted to holding. Vitor scored a knock down midway in the first round with a left cross but Francisco was on his feet in no time. Another left downed Francisco in the 2nd round with another hard left by Vitor who tried to finish Francisco with a two fisted attack but Francisco survived the round and even connected with his own counters. Francisco connected with a hard left in the beginning of the third round as Vitor , who spent a lot of energy in the previous round, faded. In the fourth, Francisco seemed to get stronger but as the round came to a close Vitor connected with a couple of hard right to the head of Francisco who went down for the last time as the referee waived off the fight at 2:50 of the round declaring Vitor winner by TKO.
