2016 RIO OLYMPICS: BOXING TRIVIA PART I
By Maloney L. Samaco PhilBoxing.com Sat, 30 Jul 2016

The boxing competitions at the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro are scheduled to take place from August 6 -21, 2016 at the Pavilion 6 of Riocentro. An exhibition and convention center, Riocentro is the largest exhibition center in Latin America and was built in 1977.
There are 10 weight categories for men and three for women, who competed in Olympic boxing for the first time in 2012 at London.
The men's categories are: lightflyweight, flyweight, bantamweight, lightweight, lightwelterweight, welterweight, middleweight, lightheavyweight, heavyweight, and superheavyweight.
The women's categories include: flyweight, lightweight, and middleweight.
An Olympic bout consists of three rounds of three minutes for men, and four rounds of two minutes for women.
The tournament has a straight knockout format, with three judges deciding the winner of each bout. The two losing semi-finalists will both receive bronze medals.
The USA's last male gold medalist was Andre Ward in lightheavyweight at the 2004 Athens Olympics. But bantamweight boxer Shakur Stevenson is the best bet for the gold in Rio de Janeiro. Stevenson won the 2014 AIBA Youth World Championships and 2014 Youth Olympic Games. Fellow American Claressa Shields won the middleweight gold in London at age 17.
Ireland's Katie Taylor had two high-profile defeats in 2016. In the 2016 World Amateur Championship in Astana, Kazakhstan, she lost in controversial fashion to Frenchwoman Estelle Mossely, whom she beat in the European Games last year. The defeat prevented Taylor from taking a record sixth world crown.
