Five defending Olympic gold medalists and five current world champions are among the 126 athletes entered into the powerhouse USA's track and field team for the 2016 Rio Games.

Among the American athletic stars are Ashton Eaton, who will try to become the first athlete to successfully defend an Olympic decathlon title since Great Britain?s Daley Thompson in 1984, and sprinter Allyson Felix, a four-time Olympic champion. Felix will run the 400m and 4x400m relay.

The other three athletes who won gold medals in the 2012 London Olympics, when the USA again dominated the athletics medal harvest with 29 golds, are Brittney Reese in long jump, Christian Taylor in triple jump and Jenn Suhr in pole vault.

Several past Olympic gold medalists from the USA will also compete in Rio, including Justin Gatlin who won the 100m in 2004 Athens Olympics and will compete in the 100m, 200m and 4x100m this year.

LaShawn Merritt, this year's champion in the 200m and 400m, will run both events in Rio, and likewise in the 4x400m. He won gold medals in the 400m and 4x400m in 2008 in Beijing. Both runners will compete against Jamaican superstar Usain Bolt, who will defend his 100m, 200m and 4x100m golds he won in Beijing and London Games.

The five reigning world champions in Team USA are Eaton for decathlon, Felix for 400m, Taylor for triple jump, Tianna Bartoletta for long jump and Joe Kovacs for shot put.
