CATARAJA, SULTAN WIN ON PINOY PRIDE 36 UNDERCARD By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Sat, 28 May 2016 BACOLOD CITY -- In undercard bouts of the Nietes-Rayito Garcia world title fight at the University of La Salle Coliseum here Saturday night, Kevin Jake Cataraja and Jonas Sultan won by stoppage. In an 8-rounds junior flyweight bout (top photo), outstanding amateur Kevin Jake Cataraja of Cebu continues to build up his pro record by registering a 4th round TKO win over overmatch Thai Chatchai Or Benjamas. KJ battered Benjamas the whole night where he scored a knockdown towards the end of the second round and another knockdown at the end of the third that the referee did not call a knockdown as it happened right after the bell. Cataraja finished off Benjamas at .14 seconds of the 4th round. Cataraja is now 4-0 with 2 stoppages. Jonas 'Zorro' Sultan successfully defended his Philippine super flyweight title after connecting a well-timed right straight that exploded squarely to the jaw of challenger Rommel Oliveros that sent Oliveros to the canvas unable to beat the count. Time of stoppage was at 2:13 of the 5th round. Both fighters fought their last two fights in Japan with Oliveros losing both while Sultan scoring a split winning over Tatsuya Ikemizu by 2nd TKO on Mar. 27, 2016. Sultan improves to 11-3-0, 7KO while Oliveros dropped to 6-3-1, 1KO. In 8-round super flyweight bout, Raul Yu of Butuan City connected with a wicked right to the face of local boy Robert Ates to win by TKO at 43 seconds of the 2nd round. Yu upped his record to 8-1-2 with 7KO while Ates dropped to 3-3-0, 3KO. In the second fight of the evening for 6-rounds flyweight, Kenneth Paul Gentallan of Tagbilaran City scored a quick knockdown in the opening seconds of the first round over Lenmar Prescillas of Mandaue City but could not put away Prescillas whose akward stance appeared to confuse Gentallan who settled for a decision win. Scores: 59-54, 59-55 and 58-55 for Gentallan. In the curtain raiser, Gerard Suico (6-3-0, 3KO) appeared to be coasting for a win against Reymund Rama (2-0-1, 1KO) until Rama scored a flash knockdown towards the end of round six, the final round of their flyweight bout to escape with a split decision victory. Rama scores his second victory with one draw and one stoppage while Suico went down to 6-3-0 with 3KO. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Dong Secuya. |
