GOLOVKIN READY TO ENGAGE LEMIEUX IN A STREET FIGHT By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Sat, 10 Oct 2015 Gennady Golovkin is ready to engage David Lemieux in a street fight in their middleweight unification bout in New York?s famed Madison Square Garden on Sunday, Manila Time. The 33 year Golovkin from Kazakhstan will put his WBA Super and WBC titles on the line against Lemieux's IBF belt in a battle where Golovkin hopes to maintain his unbeaten 33-fight record in which he has knocked out his past 20 opponents which has earned him the highest knockout percentage in the history of the middleweight division. The 26 year old Canadian Lemieux has lost only twice and that was four years ago and according to Sky Sports in Britain Golovkin feels their aggressive styles will lead to an all-out war. The popular Golvkin said "This is going to be like a street fight. He has a good style - almost like amateur style. I will beat any style - amateur style or brawl style. He will be a good test for me.? The Kazakh champion remarked that "Lemieux is a champion and he feels like a champion and this is a unification fight. I think he is ready for a unification fight and he understands the situation. He is smarter now because of his experience in his recent fights. Right now he feels better because he has a stronger team. He gets to talk with Oscar [De La Hoya] and Bernard [Hopkins]. Bernard tells him: 'I remember my fight at Madison Square Garden against Tito.' Right now he is acting like a star - I see the videos - and of course he is a star. With power alone, he could go maybe three or four rounds with me. If he boxes he could go twelve rounds. Every second is very important - every round - every step." Asked if his next fight would be against Miguel Cotto, who is ranked No. 2 or Mexico?s hugely popular Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez, who is top of the super welterweight rankings, Golovkin said: "It doesn't matter and I don't think about it. For me. Whoever is number one. I want all of the belts in the middleweight division and I will fight whoever is number one and it doesn't matter who it is. I don't like business. I like old school - who is number one?" Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
