PhilBoxing.com

Gallipoli, Italy — Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. continued his spotless run in the Standard competition of the 33rd FIDE World Senior Chess Championships with a 33-move victory, playing white against Candidate Master Marc Kirszenberg of France, in their Caro-Kann skirmish on Friday at the Grand Hotel Barada in Gallipoli, Italy.

The 63-year-old Quezon City resident tallied 3.5 points on account of three wins and one draw in four outings in the 50+ category.

Antonio climbed to joint 2nd–7th place along with his 5th-round opponent GM Murtas Kazhgaleyev of Kazakhstan, GM Victor Mikhalevski of Israel, GM Paul Motwani of Scotland, IM Fabio Bellini of Italy, and GM Mikheil Kekelidze of Georgia.

GM Michal Krasenkow of Poland grabbed the solo lead after beating GM Motwani to post his fourth straight win in as many rounds in the 50+ category.

The Mandaluyong City pride, Antonio, is aiming to surpass his runner-up finish in the Standard competition during the 2017 edition held in Acqui Terme, Italy.

“I am happy with my performance today,” said Antonio, who is fresh from winning the gold medal in the Blitz category last Thursday.

Meanwhile, FIDE Master Mario Mangubat, playing white, yielded to Metodi Stoinev of Bulgaria after 61 moves of the Benko Opening. Similarly, International Master Jose Efren Bagamasbad, playing black, was defeated by International Master Christian Maier of Germany after 48 moves of the Sicilian Defense.

Mangubat and Bagamasbad remain at 2.0 points in the 65+ category.

Mangubat will face Victor Sivirin of Kazakhstan, while Bagamasbad goes up against IM Boris Maryasin of Israel.

IM Alexander Reprintsev of Ukraine, bronze medalist in the Blitz competition, defeated IM Oleg Kozlov of Russia to score 4.0 points and take the sole lead in the 65+ category.
