MANNY PACQUIAO EN ROUTE TO DOHA TO PROVIDE SUPPORT FOR TWO FILIPINO BOXERS AT WORLD BOXING CHAMPIONSHIPS By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 08 Oct 2015 Eight division world champion Manny Pacquiao is en route to Doha, Qatar to provide support for the two Filipino boxers who hurdled their first round assignments with flourish. Light flyweight Rogen Ladon, a silver medalist at the Asian Boxing Championships inn Bangkok last month looked impressive in scoring a 3-0 shutout victory over his fancied rival Leandro Blanc of Argentina winning 30-27 on the scorecards of all three judges. On Wednesday night hard-hitting welterweight Eumir Felix Marcial, also a silver medalist at the Asian Championships in Bangkok, Thailand hammered Egypt?s Walid Said Muhammad to score a 1st round stoppage at 2:59 of the round when referee Rehi Asanau of Belarus ended the contest after the Egyptian boxer received three standing eight-counts. In a terribly erroneous report on the 2nd Day of action in Doha, the AIBA website claimed that ?Egyptian Walid Said Mohamed had Eumir Marcial on the canvas in the very first round of their bout and the Filipino welterweight ?couldn?t get back up before the referee?s ten-count.? On the contrary we followed the action ?live? on the AIBA ?live? streaming and filed this report for the New Standard boxingmirror.com in which we said ?After a few moments feeling his opponent out Marcial began to catch the Egyptian who was also a southpaw with some solid combinations and nailed Muhammad with a hard right hand followed by a flurry of punches forcing referee Rehi Asanau of Belarus to give the Egyptian boxers a standing eight count at 1:42 of the round. Marcial continued to press the action and although Said Muhammad tried to fight back Marcial caught him with another vicious combination after which the referee gave Said Muhammad a second standing eight count with 1:14 remaining in the round. Marcial sensing he had the Egyptian at his mercy continued to unload some solid combinations capped by a hard right that sent Said Muhammad staggering across the ring with Marcial going after him relentlessly and catching him with a solid body shot and as the Egyptian tried to come in he got nailed with another vicious left from Marcial and another good left hook and a right and with 12 seconds remaining the referee gave Said Muhammad a third standing eight count before sending the hapless Egyptian to his corner and signaling the end at 2:59 of the opening round. In his report from ringside, Philippine delegation head, ABAP executive director Ed Picson said Marcial, who is known for his power punches, took his time and baited the second-ranked boxer from the African Confederation Championships into coming in to meet the hard left straights and body shots of the Zamboangueno. In a post-fight comment the 19 year old former world junior and Asian youth champion said ?He actually hit me a couple of times in the early going so I said to myself I have to get back at him. Good thing my punches found their mark". Marcial faces Spain's Youba Sissokho who won a hard-fought match against Thailand's Ardee Sailom. The other Filipino boxer here-Rogen Ladon of Bago City, started off the Philippine campaign Tuesday with a rousing unanimous decision win over Argentina's Leandro Blanc. Ladon faces a formidable opponent in his next bout on Thursday when he clashes with the No. 1 seed Joselito Velazquez Altamirano of Mexico. Ladon said he is hoping that his idol, Pacquiao, ?will arrive in time because he will be a big inspiration to me.? Picson said "Eumir and Rogen both need to win at least four fights here to earn a slot to the Rio Olympics next year. This is a happy start!" The ABAP executive director was also ecstatic upon learning that boxing icon Manny Pacquiao stayed true to his word and had boarded a plane for Doha late Wednesday. Picson reported ?The whole place is agog in anticipation of his visit Thursday and the organizers from Qatar and AIBA are laying out the red carpet for him. It's going to be a hectic whistle-stop trip, but Manny said he wants to witness the new Olympic style boxing, give moral support to our boxers and visit with the huge Filipino community here in Doha, Qatar.? Other members of the lean Filipino delegation are coaches Nolito Velasco and Romeo Brin. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
