LEWKOWICZ, GELLO-ANI GIVE SONSONA ANOTHER CHANCE By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Mon, 05 Oct 2015 The team of well known international promoter Sampson Lewkowicz and his Filipino partner Sammy Gello-ani have decided to give former world champion Marvin ?Marvelous? Sonsona one more chance to mend his wayward ways and get back into the ring. Sammy Gello-ani told the New Standard/boxingmirror.com that Sonsona informed he would arrive in Manila sometime this week and then fly to Las Vegas to begin training for what looks like a really tough assignment against Claudio Marrero who has a ring record of 19 wins, 1 loss and is ranked No. 6 by the World Boxing Association. The fight is scheduled to take place sometime in the first or second week of December. Marrero, a 26 year old southpaw is coming off a big win against former world champion Rico Ramos whom he knocked out in the 3rd round of a scheduled ten round bout with a vicious overhand left last July 25. Marrero also had an outstanding record as an amateur winning a silver medal as a bantamweight at the Pan American Games in 2007 losing to current WBC world super flyweight champion Carlos Cuadras. In 2006 he won a gold medal in the Pan American Junior championships in Argentina and in 2007 settled for the silver medal in the Pan American qualifiers losing to current world super bantamweight champion Guillermo Rigondeaux in the finals. Marrero won the vacant WBC FECARBOX featherweight title with a 2nd round TKO over Francis Ruiz on January 7, 2012 and then captured the WBA North American Boxing Association title wiyh a unanimous ten round decision over Gerardo Zayas on March 2, 2012. Marrero lost to Jesus Marcelo Andres Cuellar in a clash for the WBA Interim title on August 23, 2013. Sonsona is 25 years old and also a southpaw with a record of 20-1-1 with 15 knockouts and hails from General Santos City. In his last fight on June 6 this year Sonsona scored a ten round majority decision over Jonathan Arellano but before that won the vacant WBO International featherweight title with a smashing 3rd round knockout over former 122 pound world champion Akifumi Shimoda of Japan on February 22,2014 in Macau after earlier beating former world champion Wilfredo Vazquez Jr by a ten round split decision to capture the vacant North American Boxing Federation title. Gello-ani told us the non-title fight will give Sonsona ?the opportunity to redeem himself and aim for a world title down the road. Both Lrewkowicz and Gello-ani believe Sonsona ?has time to prepare for the scheduled fight and prove to all that he can still be a world champion.?
