NBA -- Playful Cavs breeze through Media Day By Carl Tomakin PhilBoxing.com Wed, 30 Sep 2015 CLEVELAND -- The entire point of Media Day is to drum up excitement for the fans, introduce the new faces and blurt out the slogans the players use as a battle cry for the upcoming season. PhilBoxing.com received credentials to the Cavs' Media Day at the Cleveland Clinic Courts Monday afternoon and we had the privilege to interview Austin Carr, Mr. Cavalier himself, about his thoughts on the new players blending with the current roster and how the Cavs will fare against other teams in the East Conference such as the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, the Indiana Pacers and the Milwaukee Bucks. PhilBoxing.com: What do you think about the Cavs this year? Austin Carr: "They will do much better this year; they are a year older, they understand each other better, and the coaching staff know their players better including how much they can take as far as time management goes (laughs), and that includes players minutes and especially timeouts (laughs harder). "'You didn't think I'd forget to mention that, did you?' But the real key is to stay healthy. I know the Cavs will do well this year but I am also certain that the Miami Heat, Chicago Bulls, Indiana Pacers and the Milwaukee Bucks have something to say about that- every team in the East has the same goal and that is to win the Eastern Conference, so once again, the target will be on our backs." PhilBoxing.com: There are new faces coming in and not so new faces coming back to perhaps help the team win that ever elusive title. What specifically do you think Sasha Kaun, Richard Jefferson and Mo Williams have to offer? Austin Carr: "Our GM, David Griffin, has outdone himself again by keeping our roster intact (*Tristan Thompson) and more importantly by bringing back Mo Williams who works so well with LeBron James and is a more than able back up to Kyrie Irving, providing the essential rest minutes our starting point guard needs while at the same time keeping our scoring punch effective. Richard Jefferson will give LeBron James the rest he needs; a two-way player who I think will be a game-changer for the Cavs this year." Carr closed the interview by greeting "Mabuhay!" in his trademark "Get that weak stuff outta here!" voice before saying "Go Cavs!!!" We also chanced upon Cavs head coach David Blatt, who blurted "congrats on the win last night against Iran!" while referring to Smart Gilas' 27-point massacre of Iran (79-52) at the 3rd FIBA Asia U16 Championship Quarterfinals. I asked coach Blatt the common theme or slogan in this year's run and he said that LeBron always keeps saying "Championship Happens" and true enough, during the question and answer portion with the media, we asked LeBron James his thoughts about his new teammates and The King thinks they'll mesh with the rest. Every single day we have "Championship Happens." We all work hard, we know our roles and we try our very best to represent the city of Cleveland well both on and off the court. They all know, our new players, coming here, that representing the Cavs at the highest level is what it's all about. I'm excited about the guys they've brought in." Championship Happens. Even Kevin Love with his new "perm look" appeared radiantly positive and jumped on top of LeBron and Kyrie as they were doing pictorials. How's that for fan excitement? This Cavs bunch really enjoy being around each other, and hopefully it equates to playing well together to achieve that common goal. Cavs' Media Day was a rousing success. Now Cavs fans can look forward to watching this new and improved Cleveland Cavaliers to defend their Eastern Conference title and end this city's 50-year drought for a major league sports title. NOTE -- Cavs guard Iman Shumpert to have surgery on right wrist and will miss 12-14 weeks.
