NBA -- Thompson's contract talks remain in limbo

CHICAGO -- Several weeks after the annual free agency frenzy, Tristan Thompson remains a power forward without a new contract, which is puzzling considering how valuable he is to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
As is the case with contract talks, money is at the heart of the stalemate. Thompson, a 6-foot-9, 238-pounder who averaged 9.6 points and 10.8 rebounds in 20 playoffs games this past season, is seeking a five-year deal worth around $90 million.
But the Cavs are apparently balking because they are way over next season's salary cap and will be levied with heavy luxury taxes after giving Kevin Love a five-year max deal worth $110 million plus another two-year, $47 million extension for LeBron James.
Thompson's agent, Rich Paul, who is also LeBron's agent, is obviously unhappy with the current state of negotiations and told the Northeast Ohio Media Group that Thompson could possibly sign a one-year qualifying offer which "will be his last year with the Cavs."
If Thompson indeed signs a qualifying offer for one year, he will become an unrestricted free agent next summer and position himself to a handsome financial reward he is looking for.
However, a one-year deal does not provide the security blanket of a long-term deal in case an injury occurs.
Cleveland, on the other hand, is risking the ire of LeBron, who is close to Thompson. James, the four-time MVP, has lobbied for the Cavs to take care of their leading rebounder.
Training camp is at least a good six weeks away. Hopefully by then, Cleveland fans are pulling for Thompson and the Cavs to come to terms.
