Laurente comfortably makes weight for Jackson clash in Florida By Rich Mazon PhilBoxing.com Sun, 02 Aug 2015 Dennis Laurente (49-5-5, 30 KOs) of the Philippines easily fulfilled the weight requirements for his Super Welterweight / Junior Middleweight bout against John Jackson (19-2, 15 KOs) of St. Thomas, USVI, which is scheduled for Sunday evening at the Live Venue of Full Sail University in Winter Park, Florida. Both boxers weighed below the 154 pound limit of the division. Laurente was 153.6 lbs. while Jackson was 153.4 lbs. Laurente told Philboxing.com in an interview after the weigh-in Saturday that it was not difficult for him to make the required weight. ?Okay naman pakiramdam ko, kasi hindi naman ako diet sa timbang na 154. ? (I feel okay because I did not have to go on a diet to make 154.) A comparative look at both fighters? statistics will show that Jackson has the physical advantage over his Filipino counterpart. Laurente will be giving up a 4 inch advantage in height, a 7 inch advantage in reach and a 12 year advantage in age against Jackson. But the fighter out of Butuan City in the Philippines sized his opponent during the weigh-in and is confident that he can match well against Jackson despite the above mentioned limitations. ?Matangkad lang siya pero manipis naman. Parang okay lang din.? (He is just tall but he is thin. It will be okay.) Laurente acclimated to the humid Florida weather by arriving two weeks in the United States before his fight. He trained a week in California at the La Habra Boxing Club and in Florida for a full week. He will be assisted in the corner by his brother, Pederito Laurente and manager Johnny Elorde of the Elorde Gym will be his cut man. ?Parang Pilipinas lang naman ang klima dito, kaya hindi hirap.? (The weather here is just like in the Philippines, it was not hard to adjust to it.) Laurente who recently turned 38 three days ago said that they will utilize a mixture of head and body shots to try to slow and bring Jackson down. Laurente?s one advantage over Jackson is his experience in the ring. The Filipino is a veteran of 55 fights, with 49 wins and 30 KOs while Jackson has only fought 21 times (15 KOs), not even half of Laurente?s total. Jackson was brutally knocked out in the 5th round by current Middleweight champ Andy Lee in New York last year in a bout that he was winning. Their fight will be shown Live at 9 pm ET as part of a Premier Boxing Championship (PBC) triple header on Bounce TV in the United States Sunday night. Dennis Laurente avoided celebrating this week for his birthday in order to focus on his upcoming fight. His party can wait after the fight. A victory over Jackson will be the perfect birthday gift according to him. You can reach the author at rrmaze24@aol.com and @Freemazon910.
