RP FLYWEIGHT TITLE REMAINS VACANT AS LERIO DRAWS WITH BANTIGUE By Tam Almeda PhilBoxing.com Sat, 02 Jun 2007 RP No.1 Flyweight contender Danilo Lerio and No.2 contender Louie Batigue accidentally clashed heads in the 3rd round of their fight for the Vacant Philippine Flyweight Championship held at the Angono Municipal Gym in Angono, Rizal, inflicting cuts in Lerio’s right forehead and in Bantigue’s right eyebrow. While the fight was allowed to continue, Lerio’s cut continued to bleed profusely forcing the referee, on the advice of the GAB ring physician, to stop the contest at 25” in the 4th round. The stoppage being before the end of the 4th round, the fight was declared a technical draw. The excited crowd was disappointed with the way the main event ended. The first two rounds saw Lerio and Batigue sizing each other’s style and power by exchanging ‘cautious’ punches. Batigue landed stiff jabs early in the 3rd round that had Lerio on the defensive. The supporting events featured three scheduled 10-rounders of exciting and electrifying fights. Danilo Lerio’s younger brother Roberto fought the comeback fighter from Mandaluyong City, Richard Olisa, in the 116-lb fight. Olisa connected more in the first three rounds of exchanges. Olisa began to drop his hands in the 4th. It was either from fatigue or and ‘invitation’ for Lerio to attack. Momentum was on Lerio’s side when he targeted Olisa’s cut early in the 5th. Olisa dominated both the 6th and 7th rounds were he landed strong wallop punches, mostly with the left hand, that rattled Lerio and stopped his counterpunches. After a close exchange in the 9th round, Lerio fell on the canvass in a sitting position in the center of the ring from a hard left hook to the side of his body. The referee apparently did not see the punch and thinking it was a slip, encouraged Lerio to get up. When Lerio could not get up the referee began to count. At this point Lerio’s corner threw in the towel forcing the referee to waive his hands resulting in a TKO win for Olisha at 1’ 45” of the 9th round. The dynamite-fisted Denver Cuello took the second fight with a TKO win over Fabio Marfa in the 107lb division. The crowd was on its feet cheering loudly as the referee stopped the fight at 1’ 52” of the 2nd round. Cuello fought very aggressively from the start landing bombs that hurt Marfa. This similar result duplicated Cuello’s last victory – a TKO in the 1st round. There is no doubt why Cuello is rated No.2 at the RP Straw weight division. RP number 5 flyweight Danny Pe?a surprisingly disposed of a sluggish RP JR. Flyweight Champion Sonny Boy Jaro in the 4th round in their 10-round non-title fight. The fierce exchange between the fighters started in the 2nd as the crowd cheered on. Jaro was at a disadvantage when he started fighting Pe?a’s style – close contact with hard body/head punches coming from the left and right. He scored good points in the 1st and 2nd when he fought with his own style. In the 4th, Jaro fell down from a hard right to the head. He fell down again from the barrage of punches Pe?a was throwing. The referee reached the count of ten while Jaro was rising up and waived his hands as Jaro was clearly unfit to continue. Other results: Veterans Romualdo Mahinay and Boy Guevarra slugged it out in their 6-round 130lb fight. Guevarra however fell off the ring in the 2nd from Mahinay’s good combinations. Fortunately for him he fell on the official’s table which aborted the dangerous 4 feet fall to the hard gym pavement floor. Mahinay bled badly from the mouth but dominated and won the fight. The judges scored it 60 – 54, 59 – 54, and 58 – 57, The 6-round bantamweight fight between Aldren Guara and Anthony Esmedina ended in split draw. Both fighters landed in the exchanges but Guara got hurt a lot of times. He almost got floored in the 3rd. A judge had it 57-57, another scored it 58 – 56 for Guara, while the third had it 59 – 55 for Esmedina. Renan Dioso got tired in the last 2 rounds but did enough to win by a majority decision over Daniel Fereras in their 111lb division fight. There were fierce exchanges between the fighters and both showed good defense at the same time. Dioso’s energy, counterpunching and body punching were rewarded when judges scored the fight 58 – 57, 58 – 56, and 57 – 57. Anthonio Batuhan won by TKO against opponent Marco Bunaguin in their 4-round 120-lb fight. Banaguin fell down twice, enough for the referee to stop the fight at 55” of the 1st round. At the 4-round bantamweight division fight, Ronald Pontillas scored a unanimous decision over Jevy Alipio. Alipio fell down twice on the 1st round but “pounded” back into the fight in the 2nd which was, however, not enough. Scores were 40 – 34 twice and 39 – 35. Quilver Cailing hit Rodel dela Pe?a below the belt so hard in the 2nd round of their 105-lb clash that latter fell to the canvas grimacing in pain. The referee gave him 5 minutes to recover. As he laid on the canvas without signs of getting up, his trainer entered the right to help him which resulted in his disqualification. Warlito Parrenas displayed dominance, but lacking in follow up, against tough opponent Eljun Leonardo in their 108-lb 4-round fight. Leonardo got cut on the upper left eye from a punch in the 3rd which the referee ruled as an unintentional headbutt. Another headbutt was ruled in the 4th. Judges scored it both 39 – 36, and 39 – 37 for Parrenas. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Tam Almeda. |
