WBC PRESIDENT MAURICIO SULAIMAN SAYS RANDOM DRUG TESTS WILL BE INTRODUCED IN AT THE JOSE SULAIMAN CUP By Ronnie Nathanielsz PhilBoxing.com Thu, 12 Feb 2015 Sulaiman. In a major decision marking his first highly successful year as World Boxing Council president, Mauricio Sulaiman has confirmed that ?random anti doping tests for boxers, as a priority safety strategy will be put into effect ?at the 'Jose Sulaiman Cup'?, where eight boxers from different countries will participate. Sulaiman said ?This year the doping tests will be incorporated at the super welterweight tournament. From the eight fighters, there will be one or two tests. In addition to the usual tests to verify that a boxer hasn?t ingested forbidden substances, starting this year, we will have random/ surprise tests, even if boxers are not in activity.? The son and successor of the late WBC president Don Jose Sulaiman revealed on the WBC website that ?Protocols are being put in place for these random tests. This is being done to clarify Champions don't use illegal substances. With the first 15 ranked boxers random tests could be done, even if they don?t have fights scheduled.? In his first year as WBC president Sulaiman has worked tirelessly and effectively to continue to realize the projects of his Father the Great Don Jose, while also developing a brilliant mosaic of his own, to unify and further improve the Sport of Boxing. The WBC website notes that in these 365 days, Mauricio has extended the life?s work of Don Jose, who led the WBC for thirty eight years, building it into the greatest boxing organization of all, while seeking out, meeting and succeeding with an array of new, fresh, immediate and pressing challenges. Mauricio Sulaiman said ?It's been one year of contradictory feelings and emotions for everyone. Boxing was stunned and dropped its guard, when my Dad died, recognizing and honoring his dedicated life's work. Even though during his life he had lots of confrontations with promoters and media, mostly from USA, they all recognized him!? He added, ?They stopped their constant campaign of criticism trying to hurt my Father. I found open gates throughout this year and I am willing to follow my Dad's steps, including the activities and goals with which he built this great organization.? The late Don Jose often told the Manila Standard/Viva Sports how proud he was of his son Mauricio who was dedicated to the sport of boxing while Mauricio frankly and honestly said, straight from the heart: ? I will always be his son, and the people involved in boxing support me, so I am so honored to follow his steps. I will never be able to supplant my Dad. There's only one Jose Sulaiman. Due to his skills and personality, he was WBC President for 38 years, being a friend to everyone. I am not competing with my Dad. It is an honor being compared with him. My Dad will be always with me and I will try to do things as he did, to his high standards, which will make me a better President? During his one year as president Mauricio Sulaiman, has organized historic events including the very first WBC Female Convention, which was held in Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, and two Boxing Organizations? Summits with Gilberto Mendoza, World Boxing Association President, and Daryl Peoples, President of the International Boxing Federation. Mauricio Sulaiman closed 2014 impressively, organizing the WBC's 52nd record breaking Convention at the Mirage Hotel Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. Reflecting on that historic event Maurisio noted, ?It was such an important event, and it was an amazing farewell tribute salute to my Dad as well as a memorable homage to my Mom. A total of 112 Champions attended in order to celebrate the the best boxing organization- the World Boxing Council.? Click here to view a list of other articles written by Ronnie Nathanielsz. |
