SHANGHAI SIDENOTES By Rene Bonsubre, Jr. PhilBoxing.com Wed, 17 Dec 2014 SHANGHAI, CHINA ? There is nothing small about the way professional boxing is progressing in China. The big fight action in Macau has reverberated into the mainland. Shanghai?s Mercedez-Benz Arena ? an 18,000 seater stadium that resembles a huge flying saucer ? was the site for a double regional title fight card held on a weekday. Both Ik Yang Lianhui and Ma Yiming delivered in front of their home fans. Ik Yang got his second regional crown with TKO win against Thai Fahsai Sakkreerin. Yang played to the crowd but also landed the harder punches forcing Sakkreein to quit on his stool at the start of the fifth round. The unbeaten Yang (18-0,13KO?s) was awarded the IBF Pan-Pacific light welterweight title. The referee was Atty. Danrex Tapdasan of the Philippines. Yang won the WBO Asia-Pacific lightweight crown last August in the same venue. Yiming beat Tommy Seran of Indonesia by a wide unanimous verdict for the IBF Pan Pacific light flyweight belt. The scores ? Surat Soikrachang ? 98-92, Edward Ligas ? 98-92, Lu Kin Hang ? 100-90. Other results - Zhou Yunfei sent Joe Rea of Ireland down on one knee twice in the second and won by unanimous verdict. Scores ? Salven Lagumbay ? 58-54, Ye Qinghong ? 60-62, Li Tong ? 60-52. Adili vs Mike Mirafuentes of the Philippines ended in a technical draw at the end of the opening round after a clash of heads inflicted a cut on Mirafuentes? left eyelid, Yelieqiati won four round unanimous decision over Liu Yongcai, Xu Que won by first round TKO over Hu Liang, and Wang Yinggang won a four round unanimous verdict over Halimubieke. ZOU SHIMING RECEIVES WBO AWARD The World Boxing Organization (WBO) presented their International flyweight titlist Zou Shiming with the WBO Elite Boxer of the Year award. The special plaque was awarded by the organization's Asia-Pacific chief Leon Panoncillo (top photo). Zou has been the flagship of China?s foray into professional boxing made possible by the partnership of SECA and TOP RANK. Zou?s title shot against IBF flyweight world champion Amnat Ruenroeng of Thailand will be announced in a press conference here on Wednesday. MORE FIGHT CARDS NEXT YEAR The Professional Boxing Commission (PBC) of China with Executive Director Leon Panoncillo at the helm will also be working behind the scenes in what promises to be a busy year for boxing in China with plans for monthly boxing promotions by Top Rank and Seca in Macau and in various cities on the mainland.
