Filipino GM Antonio beats German FIDE Master for stay in second place in Spain Chess Tournament By Marlon Bernardino PhilBoxing.com Fri, 14 Nov 2025 Grandmaster Rogelio "Joey" Antonio Jr. crushed FIDE Master Thorsten Cmiel of Germany to stay in second place after six rounds of the III Internacional de Ajedrez Cap Negret Chess Championship 50 and above category on Thursday at the Hotel Cap Negret, Altea, Alicante, Spain. This victory, with Antonio defending well against Cmiel’s tactics, put him in second place going to the last three rounds. "I hope I can sustain the momentum," the 63-year-old Antonio said, who finished first in the blitz competition of the the 33rd FIDE World Senior Blitz Chess Championship held in Gallipoli, Italy last week. Antonio tallied 5.0 points on account of four wins and two draws in six outings. Antonio’s participation was supported by the Philippine Sports Commission (PSC), the National Chess Federation of the Philippines (NCFP), Games and Amusement Board (GAB) Chairman Atty. Francisco Rivera, the Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation (PAGCOR), chaired by Alejandro “Al” Tengco; PEZA Director General Tereso Panga, Hotel Sogo, Sportsman Christopher "Dong" Cheng, Composite Technology Inc. President and General Manager Ricardo Padrinao, Quezon City Mayor Joy Belmonte and Mandaluyong City Mayor Carmelita 'Menchie' Aguilar- Abalos. Grandmaster Keith Arkell of England defeated Ricardo Mascarell Canet of Spain to remain on top with 5.5 points. Rogelio Sperb Becker of Brazil toppled Luis Bevia Martinez of Spain to create a four-way tie at third place with 4.5 points each that includes Paulo Santanna of Brazil, Javier Unciti Juan of Spain and Pedro Maria Pastor Pons of Spain.
