PH LOSES HOSTING OF WBO CONVENTION NEXT YEAR; ORLANDO, FL WILL HOST 28TH WBO CONVENTION By Dong Secuya PhilBoxing.com Fri, 31 Oct 2014 LAS VEGAS ? The Philippines could have the honor to host next year's 28th WBO Convention which was initially approved during last year's convention in Budapest where the Philippines' Games and Amusements Board (GAB) Chairman Ramon Guanzon and Commissioners Fritz Gaston and Aquil Tamano made representations to the WBO Executive Committee for the Philippines to host the event in 2015. A couple of catastrophic events in the Philippines ? the 7.2 magnitude Bohol earthquake of Oct. 15, 2013 and the Nov. 8, 2013 Super Typhoon Haiyan's devastating effect in Tacloban and other areas in southern Philippines where disconcerting images were flashed all over the world ? dampened the enthusiasm of the organizers to hold the event in the Philippines. This morning, WBO president Francisco Valcarcel asked WBO Vice-President for Asia-Pacific Leon Panoncillo Jr if the Philippines is still willing to host the event in 2015. Panoncillo informed Valcarcel that the Philippines had withdrawn to host the event after the go signal from the organizers were not given last year. Ruben de Jesus of All Star Boxing offered Orlando, FL to host next year's WBO convention during Thursday's session of the 27th WBO convetion at the Caesars Palace Hotel in Las Vegas. GAB chairman Guanzon informed Philboxing that it is already too late to ask for a budget from the government for the event in 2015 when next year's budget has already been passed. Additionally, Guanzon said that the current officers of GAB could not make any future commitments beyond the 2015 hosting since their tenure will end in 2016 and it is not sure if they will be re-appointed to their positions. After realizing that the Philippines could not host next year's convention, Valcarcel opened the floor for bidding and Ruben de Jesus of All Star Boxing took the floor to offer their base, Orlando, Florida to host next year's convention. The executive committee unanimously voted to have Orlando as the host of next year's convention afterwards. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Dong Secuya. |
