Asis is Last Pinoy to Fight in Thailand By Lito delos Reyes PhilBoxing.com Tue, 10 Apr 2007 PHILIPPINE No. 2 featherweight contender Jack Asis of Laguna left Monday night for Thailand to fight World Boxing Council (WBC) No. 6 contender Piyarppinyo on April 13 in Bangkok, Thailand. The 23-year old Asis was accompanied by his boxing manager Dino Olivetti and matchmaker Brico Santig of Baguio City. He is the last Filipino professional boxer that was given an authority to fight in Thailand by the Games and Amusements Board (GAB). GAB chairman Eric Buhain had banned the Filipino boxers in fighting in Thailand after the death of former WBC Youth flyweight champion Lito Sisnorio last March 30. Sisnorio was knocked out in the fourth round by former world champion Chatchai Sasakul and died while undergoing brain surgery. ?Kami ang last na nabigyan ng authority ng GAB na lumaban sa Thailand,? said Olivette, a former six-time Philippine superbantamweight title-holder. Asis, also reigning Philippine Boxing Federation (PBF) featherweight champion, has a fight record of 19 wins and five loses and has knockout all his opponents in his last three fights. Asis previously knocked out Robert Dalisay in the fourth round last February 9. ?Masyado kaming maigi pinaghandaan naming ito. Magandang laban ito,? Olivetti said. Meanwhile, the ban imposed by GAB has resulted in the immediate return of several fighters who had sneaked out of the country without GAB clearance to fight in Thailand. Among them are Pit Anacaya, Elmer Muyco and Kid Orais, who returned with the belongings of Sisnorio. Sisnorio?s family received a cash donation of P10,000 from Koronadal Mayor Fernando Miguel, who visited his wake at Sitio Sulon, Barangay San Jose, Koronadal City. Filipino boxing superstar Manny Pacquiao has also pledged to donate P50,000 to the family of Sisnorio. Click here to view a list of other articles written by Lito delos Reyes. |
